Sandoval brothers Joey and Mario from Tooele were driving the last two cars still running in the final heat of the Deseret Peak Demolition Derby Saturday organized by Tooele County Search and Rescue.

First-time demolition derby driver Joey Sandoval was declared the winner and took home the top prize of $2,000 followed by his brother Mario who claimed a check for $1,500. Mario Sandoval also won the “most aggressive driver” in the final heat.

It was a good night for the Sandoval brothers and their father Ted who helped prepare the cars for the derby.

“We put a lot of work into the cars; we drive Chryslers,” said Ted Sandoval after the race. “The main thing is to get the engines running in top form. We work as a family and have a crew of six here. We also have a strategy.” He would not elaborate on the strategy. Ted Sandoval said that prior to the event his sons tested the cars in his field in Vernon.

For the first time, the June Deseret Peak Demolition Derby staged two figure 8 races which proved to be a big hit with the crowd and drivers. Tooele’s Ed Hansen was declared the winner in the final 25-lap figure 8 race with Taylor Hunt second and Zeb Hansen third.

Bo Leyva, who won the first 15-lap figure 8 race said it was his first time driving a figure 8 race and he had a great time. The crowd roared with delight as the cars raced in the figure 8 pattern sometimes smashing into each other at high speeds and other times trying to dodge each other in an attempt to win the race. Taylor Hunt and Ed Hansen were close behind Leyva.

About 17 cars in three heats plowed into each other during the demolition derby. Chairman Rob Bender said the August derby during the Tooele County Fair will be bigger. “We should see double the cars for the derby in August. The drivers really liked this derby and they did a good job and the crowd seemed to enjoy the night.”

Energetic announcer Russell Steadman kept the crowd entertained during down periods when the arena was being raked or the two giant tires hauled in for the racers to zip around during the figure 8 races. Steadman told the crowd he will race in the figure 8 event at the August derby against some of the Tooele County Fair Royalty and Tooele County Dairy Princesses.

Bender said the figure 8 races should be even better in August with more racers and lengthy 25-lap events.

Travis Nielson with his psychedelic car No. 85 won the most outrageous paint job to start the evening. Mario Sandoval and Trevor Daniels prevailed in the first heat while Ed Hansen was named the most aggressive driver. Joey Sandoval and Anthony Solis were the top two still standing after the second heat with Rick Solis named the most aggressive driver.

There were some big hits in the grudge match with cars generating top speeds and backing up to ram the competition. The final two standing after the grudge encounter were Steven Henwood and Zeb Hansen while Travis Nielson was named “most aggressive driver.”

There will be more contestants and the prize money will be greater when the Tooele County Fair Demolition Derby is held on Aug. 2.

In that derby the first-place winner will receive $2,700, second place will get $1,700 and third place will win $1,000. Two winners from each heat will get $100 each while the most aggressive driver from each heat will receive $200. Most aggressive driver overall will get a pay-out based on entry fees. Best paint job will get $100.

i have been attending the Tooele derby's since the bit and spur days and not to take a thing away from the drivers(except for that pittiful figure 8 where bender aloud eds kid to make sure his dad won)but that was a horrible turn out as far as the drivers are conserned. i understand the county comm. wanted it safer. Maybe they need to be under the light. Sandovals you did great with the rule changes i commend you for that. BTW we all miss you Todd if you were around the derby would be a show.....

I moved out of tooele county last year, but I started derbying in tooele! until this year i was always excited to drive in tooele's derby's.

This year a group of 20+ drivers (myself included) opposed the rule change and signed a petition to stop the rule change, as builders and drivers we want to be able to build cars that will take the beating that they should! not explode on one hit! If i recall correctly the Transcript ran a story on this a few months ago, Jarrod Lazenby and Randel Brown were the featured drivers on the story. As a group you will not see guys like Chad Smith #32, Jarrod Lazenby #23, Randel Brown #97, and my self #49 A.K.A. SANDBAGGER RACING! If you want hard hitting back in tooele Change the rules to match the rest of the state! For those that want rookies to compete, Start a stock class for them not Change the whole game to accomodate them. I was a rookie once, took a lot of beating back then, but I still drive!

Oh by the way I was at the Bluffdale Derby, Took the Most Agressive Driver Award in my heat and over all!

want to see a good set of rules the rest of the state uses http://www.stirrindirtracing.com/

If promotor is correct, why did 12 local drivers go to the bluffdale derby and not their local show? Something fishy about that. I thought the drivers are the ones that made this all possible, as we can see, without them its just not the same...

I also agree with many of the comments. I don't remember a car count that low in quite a few years as a spectator. Is the fair board or commissioners going to do anything at all or let the biggest event at the fair disappear? Hopefully it won't and the car count will return to normal. This had to be one of the most disappointing derbys I have been to. The sad thing is my kids even noticed a difference.

i still can not believe they are calling this derby a sucsess it was by far the worst derby ever in tooele somone one posted on here that the car count is allways low for the june show well last year was 31 this year 12 mr bender is over the derby out here and from what i have heard the guy that changed the rule i also read what he said in the paper and well he was wrong he promised a good car count and show well 12 cars is not a good car count now as cars are getting harder to find i do understand that the drivers dont want to waist them and want to build them as tough as they can with in the rules well so i wondered if all te shows would have a hard time getting cars so i did some looking around and this is what i have come up with

ogden may mania 20 cars

riverton days 26 cars

bluffdale 28 cars 12 local tooele guys

delta 32 cars 8 trucks

so the car count is down but tooele is is the lowest in the state due to there rules now these shows i have listed are small derbys not the big ones i have heard mr bender is promising a big turnout for the fair derby just like he did the june derby so i guess we will see i think the tooele county commisiomers need to step up and get the rules back before the tooele derby is something of the past mr bender failed plain as that

I agree with derby1. The drivers drove with what they had and some of them still hit pretty hard. The derby was just not the same without the harder hits and salt lake drivers I remember one in particular who was number 12 but I don't know his name. I have attended derby's all over and Tooele used to be one of the hardest hitting and no one has been hurt when I have watched. I hope this was just a fluke. And I can't remember the june derby having less then about 18-20 cars for at least 5 years. Hopefully the fair will be better

No one is trying to take anything from the drivers at this last derby at all! Every one did the best with what they were allowed to do with there cars. It was also great to see a lot of new drivers. As a local derby fan not a driver. I enjoy going out to support our local drivers. We are all just a little disappointed to see such a low turn out at our local derby of both the drivers and fans. We need to loosen the rules on the drivers allowing them to make and build a car that they will not be affraid to drive and or get hurt in safety is the key!! But by changing the rules to make the cars weaker is not the answer. Bring back to old rules and get the drivers back get the crowd back. If needed compare our old rules with other derby rules, make the changes needed(if any) so every on can come in august and have fun!!! We need more drivers(Dulavy's,Lazenby,Gunn etc) drivers and fans to make it more enjoyable for everyone!!!

Maybe some people have a hard time with change but I hate to tell you that change is going to happen whether you like it or not. If you don't like the derby fine don't go but please don't ruin it for others by being overly negative. If you want to watch people hit each other and bleed go to the UFC not the derby! Also, maybe you should look into the rules to see "exactly" what is going on before you make assumptions about "the rules have changed and not for the good". I guess it is easier to sit and bash the derby and the drivers then going to support our local people! There are some people that just aren't happy unless they cause hate and discontent. I think that the old rules may have worked in the past but drivers got to much freedom and made the cars stronger and stronger which made it unsafe for the drivers inside. When the cars hit and don’t bend it is the drivers inside that take the impact. The people that I have talked to enjoyed the derby and don't understand what all the fuss is about and will be there in August again to have fun and see familiar faces and make new friends! And with your seat empty my guess is that our time at the derby will be that much better!!!

As and avid derby goer in the past and I'm sad to say I missed this one but I did hear that I didn't miss much and that it was probably one of the worst National Anthem singers they have had.

Mike S. needs to remember that derbies in the past were no-weld, not like they are now where they build tanks to drive in. To me it was nice to see a new breed of drivers that are just getting into it. I think this gives these new and young drivers a chance to learn how to build cars without spending alot of money. After going to many derbies the June Derby has always had a low count of cars and this year was no different. I say give the rules a chance lets see what happens in August and go from there.

Wow, this derby was different then Tooele derbies of the past, and not in a good way. I have heard and asked around and it is rumored that the rules were changed so the drivers couldn't build their cars as good, is this true? Seemed like it when the cars bent faster and no one was hitting. If so, they need to go back to the old rules. Much better for the fans. Hopefully this will change or Tooele derbies will be a thing of the past.

I agree with the last few comments. This derby was different than derby's in the past. Not as many cars, none of the big names were their like lazenby (not sure how to spell) the two dunlavy's, chad smith and others that I can't remember. I only saw a few hard hits, the rest seemed like they were in a race or something. I was very disappointed. This was one of the worst tooele county derbies I have been to in a long time. I doubt I will go watch the fair unless some of the harder hitters come back. Was the rules changed or something?

There were actually only 2 heats with 12-13 big cars. One of the most boring derby's I have ever been to. It seemed as if many of the drivers were to scared to hit because they would ruin their cars. I heard it was because of a rule change that many of the hard hitters and exciting drivers to watch were not there. I am not going to waste my money going to the county fair to watch this year...
