Lions Quest, a 14-week program sponsored by Communities That Care educates fifth and sixth graders about why they should choose to just say "no," and how to keep their self-esteem high.
"It is like DARE, but bigger," said Jaclynn Bonnelli, Communities That Care's programs coordinator. "It really is a labor of love."
Preteens making the transition from elementary school to junior high are infamous for being susceptible to peer pressure. Studies have shown that preparing these children by teaching them about the harmful effects of substance abuse and other negative influences reduces their chances of becoming at-risk teens. The Lions Quest program aims to present kids with healthy alternatives.
In addition to having classes for the kids, Bonnelli said, there are also workshops for parents to attend for further direction and guidance.
"In our opinion, it is the best program that there is. We think it's wonderful for both parents and kids," said Tooele Mayor Patrick Dunlavy.
He also said that the program would be implemented again next year in the schools.
"We are working on going countywide," said Bonnelli.
