A new water-skiing ranch and residential development near Vernon was approved for construction by the Tooele County Planning Commission last Wednesday.

The Last Chance Ski Ranch was originally scheduled to break ground in July, but developer and owner Rick Lybbert said issues with obtaining permits and approvals took longer than expected.

"We wanted to create a place where people can own their own home on a man-made lake and have fun water-skiing, and we've got it all approved now," he said. "This was the final go-ahead. We had been looking for property for four years and found it a year ago, and it took us about a year to go through the process of getting everything approved."

Lybbert said the ranch will be located a mile and a half north of Vernon on 80 acres of land, and that there will be a total of 19 home lots for sale, each of which will be just over one-half acre. Sixteen of the lots will be surrounding two man-made lakes 2,200 feet long by 280 feet wide with a depth of 7 feet. There will also be a parking area for people who just want to spend a day on the water.

"The ranch will be just outside the Vernon city limits on the Pony Express Road in Tooele County, and we will have deeded lots for sale as well as private boat docks for people to keep their boats on the water," Lybbert said. "People can live at the ranch either part time or full time. Our next step is to start building it and eventually get it finished. It will probably be completed sometime during 2008."

Lybbert, who has worked as a physical therapist for 10 years, also said he also has plans to form a water-skiing camp for disabled people once the ranch gets up and running.

"The camp for the disabled will be three days long and held four times a year," he said. "We will also have certain days available at the ranch for just those in the disabled community who want to learn to water-ski. It will also be built to ADA [Americans With Disabilities Act] standards."
