Mountain View outscored Tooele 16-5 in the final 6:24 of the second quarter to break open a tight game and cruise to a 60-50 victory over the Buffs Friday night.
During that time frame Tooele was actually outscored 16-2 until Chase Banks fired up a 30-foot three-point shot which banked in to cut the Bruins' lead to 31-23 at intermission.
Prior to Mountain View's second quarter lead, the Buffs held a four-point lead when Tanner Stuart drained a three-point shot to make it 21-17 for Tooele with 6:24 left until intermission.
Mountain View increased its lead to 45-34 after three quarters by outscoring the Buffs 12-8 during the third.
In the fourth, the Bruins jumped out to a 16-point lead, but Tooele's full court trapping defense wreaked havoc for the Bruins in the final frame and Tooele trimmed the lead to 10 by the time the buzzer sounded to end the game. The Buffs outscored the visitors 16-15 in the final frame.
"We finally outscored a team in the fourth quarter," said coach Ray Brazier.
"The players are starting to see how they fit into the offense and defense and how each one can contribute. As a result they're playing much better," he said.
"They also are playing with a lot more confidence and believing in themselves. During timeouts you could see their confidence. They had believed that they could win the game. The confidence was coming from the players we didn't have to coax them," the coach said.
Tooele jumped out to a slim lead in the first quarter when Boone Baird sank a three-point shot to make it 13-10 for the Buffs. Tooele led 14-13 after the first stanza.
Banks, Baird and Tanner Stuart all sank two three-point shots each during the game. Stuart scored nine of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter helped by steals and assists from Matt Wihongi.
Banks and Baird scored 10 each, Wihongi 8 and Jordan Clemente 3.
Tooele faces a towering Orem team tonight in Tooele. The Buffs lost to the Tigers by 23 earlier in the year.
Goose Kallunki and Daniel Hockersmith both average in double figures for the Tigers. Stuart averages 14.5 points per game for the Buffs and Wihongi averages 11 points per game.
After tonight's game Tooele does not play until Feb. 5 at Timpview.
