Are you registered to vote? If not, you still have time -- barely. Tooele City and Grantsville City will hold primary elections on Sept. 11, 2007. If you have not registered, have moved within Tooele County, or have moved into Tooele County and live within either of these cities, you still have time to register to vote. You can register in the clerk's office in person with a picture ID until Aug. 27 at 5 p.m. There will be no satellite registration.
Anyone who is a registered voter within the Tooele City or Grantsville City limits and who would like to vote early may come to any one of the following locations: Tooele County Courthouse, 47 S. Main St., 3rd floor, Room #318; Middle Canyon Elementary, 751 E. 1000 N. in Tooele; or Grantsville City Hall, 429 E. Main St.
Early voting will run from Tuesday, Aug. 28, through Friday, Sept. 7, with no voting on Labor Day on Sept. 3. Voting times are from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m, Monday through Friday.
A valid picture identification is required for early voting.
Absentee ballots will be available beginning Aug. 27. If you have already applied for an absentee ballot and live within the Tooele City or Grantsville City limits, you should receive your ballot by Aug. 31. If you would like to receive an absentee ballot, the forms are available online at www.co.tooele.ut.us/absent.pdf.
Just fill out the form and mail it to the clerk's office at 47 S. Main St., Tooele, UT 84074, and we will be happy to mail you a ballot. Absentee ballots are paper optical scan ballots that come directly to your home. You fill in the oval for the candidates of your choice and mail it back to the clerk's office.
With absentee ballots there's no need to worry about going to the polls on election day, long lines or bad weather. Your votes are counted on election night, along with all of the early votes and those that were cast on election day.
Marilyn Gillette is the Tooele County Clerk.
