The new owner of Jen's, formerly Kravers, in Grantsville, is hoping a revamped decor and healthy menu additions will help keep the fast-food eatery popular even as more national food chains come to town.
"I want to create a healthy menu because we have the new Anytime Fitness behind us," said owner Jen Sooaemaleoagi. "So if we add something healthy and it tastes good, we're set."
At the same time, however, Sooaemaleoagi said she doesn't have plans to sacrifice any local favorites at the drive-in or dine-in restaurant -- including burgers, fries and some of the Mexican menu items.
"Jen's will continue to evolve, but I don't want to take away people's favorite foods," she said.
Sooaemaleoagi purchased the Main Street restaurant in October 2006, and leased the building until purchasing that too a year later.
"We used to live in Roy, but we decided a small town would be good for the children, so we were going to move to Nevada," Sooaemaleoagi said, adding that her father and a sister already lived in Grantsville. "But then my sister, Faye Hall, who is a real estate agent, told us 'Kravers is for sale'. It was perfect, it just fit. We love it here."
Beyond some slight changes to the menu, Sooaemaleoagi said she plans on decorating with some historical Grantsville photos to add a little nostalgia to the walls.
"It will reflect Grantsville," Sooaemaleoagi said. "We want to bring that small-town feel back."
She also wants to build a sense of tradition around the eatery.
"We want to make holidays at Jen's a big deal," said Sooaemaleoagi. "For Valentine's Day we want to have a special dinner with banana splits. We want to make it fun. We want people to know that they can come here on Valentine's Day and we'll have something special. We want to make it almost like a tradition."
Sooaemaleoagi, whose restaurant is adjacent to Subway and Domino's outlets, said her overall goal is customer satisfaction.
"We want to keep prices low and food good," said Sooaemaleoagi. "I love the customers, and I love that I can be here and make people happy. When you make good food and make people happy, there's no better feeling."
