Thank you, Tooele County, for a very successful election. Whether your candidates won or not, the turnout was exceptional. With over 30 percent of the registered voters voting early, I was sure we would have an 80 percent voter turnout. Now you know why I don’t gamble.
However, the county, as a whole, did have a 66 percent turnout. There were some precincts that had over 75 percent of their residents vote: Tooele 3, Stansbury 3.3, Lake Point 1 and 2, Stockton 1 and 2, Ophir, Vernon, Rush Valley, Terra, Ibapah and Wendover.
We had 6,412 people vote early, 964 vote by absentee ballot, 1,890 vote in permanent by-mail precincts, and 7,968 vote on Election Day at the polls — which does not include provisional ballots. Almost as many people voted early as voted on Election Day.
No matter how you voted, thanks for voting.
I would also like to thank our wonderful and dedicated election workers. They begin working the night before the election and aren’t finished until past 10 p.m. on election night. They are a very patriotic group of workers and we could not hold an election without their help.
Thanks also to the Transcript-Bulletin for their excellent coverage. I’m glad they’ve decided to go back to printing the results the morning after the election — some traditions are worth hanging on to.
Last, thanks to the wonderful ladies who are part of the Tooele County Clerk’s Office: Debbie Smart, Holly Shields, Michelle Pruden, Patricia Weber, Jamie Beacham and Renee North. The election process starts in the clerk’s office about three months before Election Day and runs until two weeks after. As all of you know that have visited our office, these workers are very professional, knowledgeable, helpful and some of the finest government employees you will ever have the pleasure of meeting. I’m proud to call them co-workers.
Marilyn Gillette is the Tooele County clerk.
