Local Dems need to get their act together

Perhaps there is no greater sign of how badly the Democratic Party is losing the war in Tooele County than the battle won by Jim Gowans in last week’s election.

Gowans, the most popular and well-known state legislator in Tooele County, a man who has campaigned and won re-election to the House every two years for the better part of two decades, narrowly defeated his Republican challenger Dan Egelund by a margin of 3 percent of the vote. That photo finish seems all the more improbable when you consider Gowan’s war chest was more than eight times as large as Egelund’s, this was Egelund’s first run at any political office, and Egelund ran a fairly low-key campaign during which he often praised Gowan’s leadership.

This race proved it’s becoming almost impossible for a Democrat to win elected office in Tooele County. In fact, no Democrat in the other three legislative races covering the county got more than a quarter of the total vote. And the Democrats didn’t even bother to field a candidate as an alternative to incumbent County Commissioner Colleen Johnson — whose Constitution Party challenger, by the way, got a higher percentage of the vote than any Democrat except Gowans.

Local Democrats anemic showing was especially pronounced in light of the fact that the national party claimed the presidency and gains in both houses of Congress, and Utah as a whole voted less red than in 2004.

In the past, the local party has thrown up its hands, claiming an influx of young Republican families has diluted its base in the county. But that excuse ignores the fact that the party itself often appears weak and disorganized. Not being able to field a candidate for county commission is shameful, and many of the candidates that did turn up for the party in other races were markedly below the level of their Republican opposition in background, experience, funds raised and enthusiasm for campaigning. To make matters worse, the party’s senior leadership doesn’t seem to offer those brave souls who do carry its banner much in the way of campaign advice, fund-raising aid or general promotion.

A second problem is that nobody seems to know what local Democrats stand for. That wasn’t true 30 years ago, when they were the party of the working man — civilian employees at Tooele Army Depot and Dugway Proving Ground, tradesmen and builders, cops and firefighters, farmers and ranchers. How many of those people would consider themselves Democrats now? And where’s the opposition message? Where are the traditional Democrats who are willing to oppose foreign nuclear waste, put the breaks on rampant development and urban sprawl, stick up for working families, and fight for quality-of-life issues along with economic development?

Tooele County needs two viable political parties. For that to happen, local Democrats need to get their act together.

I take exception to the Transcript's comment in this article that states: "A second problem is that nobody seems to know what local Democrats stand for." That is PRECISELY why the Democrats are in decline. The Democrat party has been hijacked by their more "looney liberal left" elements, and are now perceived as no longer being the party of the working class, - rather they are the party who believes in "income redistribution" from those who work hard to make their money to those who would rather have it handed to them by way of legislation. The Demos need a local leader with a seasoned, reasoned approach to growth, not a "no-growth" mentality (or worse yet, the Repulican mantra of "Build Build Build, we'll find the water later").... I beleive that a Democrat that shows she or he is a fiscal conservative, that does not envision throwing taxpayers money at every problem as the only solution to a problem, and who believes in protecting the environment, and turning Tooele County into a "GREEN" county by developing our natural areas for hiking and cycling trails, et al, and turning the dirt brown of Tooele County to a shade of Green, and can just say "no" to the Unions who fund so many Demos campaigns, (which we know Gowans took $ from the Teachers Unions), in exchange for more income redistribtuion or labor-friendly legislation, would win in a landslide. We do need a two party system, and since we do not have that, we keep re-electing folks with no new ideas, and that seem to be in the developers & corporations pockets. The democratic party used to be a very big tent, that included dissenting ideas and some of the best battles were amongst themselves, but now they walk lock step on issues of abortion, gay "rights" and "tax until it hurts"....ideas not embraced by the majority of locals as evidenced by the recent elections....Now in the case of Gowans, this will be his last rodeo. He was seen as the kindly old rancher, former Principal and Educator, and generally viewed as harmless having produced no significant legislation, and basically being a seat warmer at the Legislature, .... instead of the Pet of the Teachers Union that he really is...(which will be brought out by a more aggressive, experienced and better funded opponent next time).

Unless the demos come face to face with the reality that the National Democrats far-left agenda does not play well in Tooele, they will be relegated to battling with the Constituion Party for "also ran" & honorable mention....in the near future political races.
