World Superbikes

Title contenders Ben Spies (Yamaha World Superbike) and Noriyuki Haga (Ducati Xerox) scored a win apiece in the penultimate round of the Hannspree FIM Superbike World Superbike in front of a record 81,000 spectators at Magny-Cours in France, but it is the Japanese rider who now has the advantage in the points table. The Texan dominated race 1 but Nitro-Nori responded in the second encounter with a lights-to-flag victory, as Spies was unable to go any higher than fourth. Ten points now separate the two as the series heads for its final round in Portugal in three weeks time. Max Biaggi scored two more podium finishes for Aprilia Racing, a third and a second, Jonathan Rea grabbed a third for Hannspree Ten Kate Honda, while Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) had an off day.

Miles injured

Utah Jazz guard-forward C.J. Miles suffered a ruptured left thumb ligament during practice Monday at London’s O2 Arena and will require surgery to repair the ligament, Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor announced. Miles was examined by team orthopedist Dr. Lyle Mason and is expected to return to Salt Lake City to have the procedure performed.

Weber State football

C.J. Palmer scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 6-yard run early in the fourth quarter and Montana State stopped a late fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line to beat Weber State 26-21 Saturday. Aaron Mason ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns, while Palmer finished with 45 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Bobcats (3-1 overall, 2-0 Big Sky). Montana State has won six straight meetings between the teams on the Wildcats’ home field. The Wildcats (2-3, 2-1) had a chance to win the game, but the Bobcats wrapped up Bo Bolen for a 4-yard loss on fourth-and-goal at the 1 with 28 seconds left. Weber State took a 21-20 lead late in the third quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Higgins to Mike Phillips. The pair hooked up earlier on a 68-yard scoring play that put Weber State up 15-14 late in the second quarter.

Anifowoshe’s fumble return is the longest in school history and the first returned for a touchdown against Texas State since 2004 (Baylor). Major Gray added 93 rushing yards and a TD for Southern Utah.

Dixie State

The Dixie State rushing attack was held to negative yardage Saturday afternoon by nationally-ranked Central Washington en route to a 37-6 defeat in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference games. Next week Dixie will host Western Oregon

Snow College
