Tooele didn’t sweat the small stuff, because in the second half they put away their opportunities Monday afternoon in a 6-1 beating over the Dons.
A pair of sisters caused most of the damage against Spanish Fork. Lizzie Stewart earned the hat trick with three goals while Airica Stewart finished off two second-half opportunities to provide most of the firepower for Tooele. Miranda Mott was the other goal scorer for the Buffs as she hit the net in the 75th minute of an impressive second half.
Tooele allowed a couple scoring chances early in the first half which were sparked by passes from Spanish Fork’s Shandy Elliott, as she passed to Shea Johnson and Amber Noguera but those chances were turned away.
In the 10th minute, it was Tooele taking care of their chances to score as Lizzie Stewart jumped in front of a Spanish Fork goal kick and quickly booted a kick inside the left corner of the net to give the Buffs a 1-0 lead.
The Tooele pressure didn’t end there as the Buffaloes racked up numerous shots on goal but could not convert. Airica Stewart, Sierra Strate and Cassidee Christensen each took turns burning the Don defense but couldn’t get a goal into the net.
In fact, Tooele dominated the ball possession time and made sure to set up on offense so as to make good angles for their teammates to pass to. The Buffs set up in triangle formations in order to make it more difficult for teams to defend them. They also were beating out Spanish Fork to the ball the majority of the time but only had a 1-0 halftime lead to show for it.
“I think our summer conditioning has been working out for us on the field,” said Tooele head coach Donna Ward. “I am just proud of all of them.”
As far as taking care of scoring chances, Tooele was a different team in the second half. In the first minute of the second, Lizzie Stewart stopped a corner kick with the bottom of her cleat from Christensen and spun around and deposited a goal in the top right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
The scoring just continued from there when Airica Stewart took a long throw in from Makaylee Bird in the 60th minute and dribbled up the left side of the field and snuck the ball past the keeper for the 3-0 advantage.
With the hard work Tooele put into its game against Spanish Fork, the ball just seemed to be bouncing Tooele’s way. Like when Lizzie Stewart found herself in just the right position when the ball bounced off the right post and right at Stewart’s foot as she calmly poked in Tooele’s fourth goal.
Spanish Fork did manage to slide in a goal in the 73rd when Kaylee Beckstrom booted a kick from about 35 yards out and had it slip past the keeper into the goal to make the score 4-1.
Any hopes of a Spanish Fork comeback however were quickly squashed as Mott found herself deep in Don territory and scooped the ball over the keeper but into the net for a 5-1 lead in the 75th minute.
With only one minute remaining, Airica Stewart got into a one-on-one with the keeper and slid to poke the ball just out of reach and into the net to finalize the 6-1 result for Tooele.
“We have a really young team out there and they are developing into better soccer players,” said Tooele assistant coach Kim Palmer.
Tooele’s next home game will be Aug. 25 against East at 3:30 p.m.
