Food drop

Utah Food Bank will be having a food drop at Deseret Peak on Friday, May 8 starting at 7 a.m. for sign-ups. Food distribution will begin around 8 a.m. and continue until all food is distributed (approximately 10:30 a.m.). Please remember to bring your driver’s license or other I.D. Settlement Canyon Irrigation will be turning on water this Saturday, May 2.

Volunteering opportunity

Fish Springs wildlife habitat

The public is invited to joint the staff and friends of the Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge in celebrating 50 years of existence. The event will consist of a variety of classes to take place on May 9 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. ad May 10 from 8 a.m. to noon. All classes require pre-registration to ensure a slot. A registration form can be found at www.fws.gov/fishsprings. Deadline is May 1.

Grantsville

Grantsville irrigation

The irrigation water is now on. The board has issued two use-or-lose turns to expire on June 1. One regular turn has also been issued. Metered users have 250,000 gallons per share. Non-metered users please adhere to these rules: no open hoses, no watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., do not exceed eight hours, do not leave sprinklers in any one spot for more than 1 1/2 hours.

Stansbury Park

Benson Grist Mill opening

CERT meetings

All people who are CERT trained or anyone interested in CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is invited to our bi-monthly meetings. They will be held at 7 p.m. at the Fire Station in Stansbury Park on May 7. The meeting on May 21 will be held at the Stansbury Park Clubhouse. Deseret Peak

Swimming lessons

Deseret Peak Aquatic Center swim lessons registration begins Monday, May 4, at 9 a.m. Sign-ups will continue daily Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., until the pool opens on May 23. Payment is due at the time of registration. The fee is $25 for one student or $22.50 each for more than one student. Call 843-4035 for registration information. Session dates — 1: June 8-18, 2: June 22-July 2, 3: July 6-16, 4: *July 20-31, 5: August 3-13. Our lessons are offered at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., and 11 a.m. *There will not be lessons on July 24 for holiday celebrations.

Tooele County Fair entertainment

Schools

Orchestra spring concert

The Tooele elementary, jr. high and high school orchestras will present their annual Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 12 at 7 p.m. in the Tooele High School auditorium. The free concert will display the students’ achievements during this year. Students have been working very hard and have some fun and exciting music to present from many periods and styles. The concert finale will be a symphonic orchestra with the Tooele High School strings aided by wind and percussion from the Tooele High band performing selections from “Phantom of the Opera” arranged by Calvin Custer.

Dance recital to help family

On May 8 at 7 p.m. in the Grantsville High School auditorium, Grantsville Dance Company will be holding a free dance recital and will have a donation box at the entrance to donate to the Eddie Hughes family to help fund his cancer treatment. Come watch an evening of dance and help a Grantsville family.

THS class of 1999 reunion

Class of 1999, our 10 year reunion is fast approaching. It will be on June 19 and 20, 2009. We have a great weekend planned. Friday evening will be at the Deseret Peak swimming pool and Saturday will be a nice dinner at the Salt Lake Hardware Building (near the Gateway). THS Sha-Ronn concert

The Tooele High Sha-Ronns are having their annual concert on Friday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at the Tooele High gym. Adults $3, children $2, 5 and under are free. Please come and support the Sha-Ronns.

Uniform bids

Tooele County School District is now taking bids for the physical education uniforms for the school year 2009-2010.  If you are interested please reply to slindberg@tooelesd.org for further information. The bids need to be in by May 1.

CTE fair

The Tooele County School District is hosting a Career and Technical Education Fair at the district office, 92 Lodestone Way, May 5-7 from 4-8 p.m. An awards ceremony will be May 7 at 7 p.m. Samples of students work will be on display from all schools in 7th through 12th grade. CTE includes: woodworking, clothing, foods, photography, agriculture educational and FFA, auto mechanics, medical related classes, drafting, construction and business/computer classes.

Spring carnival

Middle Canyon Elementary PTA is hosting a Spring Fling Carnival on Friday, May 1 from 5-8 p.m. (751 East 1000 North). Tickets are three for $1 and are available at the school the night of the carnival. Meal deals also available. There will be rides, games, food and fun for everyone. Kindergarten registration 09-10

Kindergarten registration for Fall 2009 enrollment is currently being held at all elementary schools through the end of May 2009. To be eligible to enter kindergarten, your child must be at least 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2009. Free diabetes education

Free diabetes education provided by Eileen Deleeuw, MS,RD, Certified Diabetes Educator, is being offered in Tooele. It is sponsored by Animas Corporation and Advanced Practice Medical Clinic for persons with diabetes on insulin or who are poorly controlled on two or more oral diabetes medications. Persons with diabetes who do not meet these qualifications for individual appointments may attend group classes. For appointments or to sign up for classes, call 843-8881. Before you call to make an appointment, your doctor should fax a referral to 843-8802 that includes your labs, medications, and diagnoses. For further questions, call Eileen at 840-0299 or 882-5671.

Adult education

Get your high school diploma. All classes for a high school diploma, adult basic education, GED preparation, word processing, drivers’ education and English as a second language available. Register now to graduate — just $35 per semester. Located at 76 S. 1000 West, call 833-1994. Adult Education classes are for students 18 and over.

English as second language

ESOL conversational classes are held Monday and Thursday from 7-9 p.m. ESOL students may also come anytime the center is open for individualized study. Registration is $35 per semester.

Host families

NWS PEACE Program is seeking four families to host high school students from Ecuador, Turkey, Brazil, Thailand, Belgium and Finland for the 2009-10 academic year. Students are 15-18 years old and will arrive beginning in August. Students need a bed, meals and caring family for 5-10 months. Women artist call for entries

AAUW is sponsoring the 14th Biennial Juried Exhibition, “Celebrating the Diversity of Women: Utah Women Artists” which will be at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center Aug. 13-Sept. 30. The Ogden, Utah LDS Institute of Religion Choralaires and Folk Dancers will present an entertaining family variety show titled “Come Home.” This group has 49 singers and 12 folk dancers that perform annually throughout the U.S. Come and enjoy a wonderful evening of family entertainment on Wednesday, May 6 at p.m. at the Tooele North Stake center, 583 N. 270 East, Tooele. Nonprofit agency funding

The Tooele County Emergency Food and Shelter Program Board has been awarded a direct allocation of $13,026. The funds supplement feeding, sheltering, rent/mortgage and utility assistance. The board will convene to determine the best use of these funds and to select local recipient organizations to provide services. Any nonprofit or governmental agencies interested in applying can contact Lori Sandoval at (435)882-1278. Applications will be accepted until May 12.

Food pantry

The First Baptist Church in Tooele is offering a clothing closet and emergency food pantry to meet the needs of our community. Anyone with clothing needs is welcome. Baby foods are now available. The food pantry is available for emergency needs. Hours of operation are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. We are located at 580 S. Main St. For information call 882-2048.

Mother’s Day breakfast

Roundtable for all scout leaders will be held on Thursday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Tooele Jr. High School. Healing horses volunteers

Healing Horses Therapeutic Riding Center is going to start training volunteers on Wednesday, May 6 at 6 p.m. at the Tooele Bit ‘N’ Spur Arena located on 600 N. 200 West. West Desert Youth Rodeo

There is a new youth rodeo association this summer, the rodeos will be held at Desert Peak Outdoor Complex we will be holding a meeting and would like to encourage parents and potential participants to attend and find out more and share your thoughts. Boys & Girls Club summer camp
