Only trailing Ogden by one goal heading into half-time, Grantsville looked to be in prime position to make a second half comeback. However, the Tigers had other ideas as they used an explosive six goal second half to bury the Cowboys 7-0 Thursday in Grantsville.
Anne Starley did most of the damage for the Tigers as she pushed the Grantsville defense all afternoon and scored three goals of her own while helping on others.
Ogden used a physical style of play to control the ball in the early minutes of the game. Sarah Diamond and Starley worked the ball well into the Grantsville defense but keeper Stacie Hughes and her defensive help were able to stave off Ogden’s frantic scoring attempts.
That was until the 17th minute as Starley got a breakaway and neatly stuffed the ball into the net for the first goal of the game.
To Grantsville’s credit, their defense held off the Ogden hard-charging scoring attack for the rest of the half. With the play of Sarah Isom and Alyssa Ortega helping out Hughes in the back field.
The offense for Grantsville however, was really stymied by the physical defense of the Tigers. Kendall Levine, Emily Lakin and Abbey Beazer all tried to break the defensive front of Ogden but was unsuccessful in the first half.
In the second half, Ogden appeared to be a different team on the offensive side. They moved the ball well and their offense worked like a well-oiled machine.
Three minutes into the half Cassie Hanson perfectly kicked the ball to the center to a waiting Katie Nix, who kicked the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Cowboys that led to a down-pour of Tiger goals.
From the 50th to the 55th minute Ogden quickly tacked on three goals to make the score 5-0 and it only got worse from there as Ogden tacked on two goals to make the final 7-0.
Grantsville did have some scoring chances late in the second half with a pair of corners but were quickly cleared by the Tiger defense.
The loss puts the Cowboys down to 0-2 in Region 11 and they will travel to Ogden to play Ben Lomond Thursday at 4 p.m.
