After trailing 2-0 early in the first half to Timpview, Tooele soccer made an impressive comeback to tie the game at 2-2 early in the second half. However the visiting Thunderbirds scored two late goals to pull away from the Buffaloes for a final of 4-2 in Tooele.
Sharon Lyman scored the first half goal to cut the lead in half and Tessie Zarogoza nailed a long kick in the corner of the net to tie the game in the second half in the hard fought loss.
Timpview started out the game pressing the Buffalo defense with constant pressure from Laura Sudweeks. In the fifth minute Sudweeks placed a perfectly kicked corner to Kathy Cannon who bicycled the kick into the net for the game’s first goal.
Kelsey Badger got into the act for visiting Timpview as she started making runs at the Tooele defense which resulted in a break-away that she put into the goal in the 27th minute for the 2-0 Thunderbird lead.
From there however, Tooele didn’t hold their heads down. Instead they fought even harder to get themselves back into the contest.
Only four minutes after the Timpview goal, Kahri Golden started finding seams throughout the Thunderbird defense. Golden perfectly crossed a ball to Lyman in the center and Lyman put the ball into the net and Tooele back into the game.
Lyman’s goal seemingly shifted the momentum in Tooele’s favor. Sierra Strate and Golden came out in the second half and were looking to make runs at the Timpview defense. Off of a Tooele corner kick, Timpview had thought they cleared the ball but instead put the ball at the foot of Zarogoza, which blasted the ball out of reach of Timpview keeper Emily Wallace, and tied the game at 2-2.
“We dominated 50 minutes of that game,” said Tooele coach Donna Ward. “Unfortunately the 30 minutes that Timpview dominated they just took more advantage of their scoring chances.”
With the game all square at 2-2, Timpview was frantically trying to score a go-ahead goal. Tooele keeper Kelsey Johnson made several great saves to keep her team in it. Timpview, however, scored a goal that no keeper in the state could have gotten a finger on.
Becca Bindraban crossed a ball in the 51st minute right into the waiting forehead of Sudweeks for the go-ahead goal for Timpview 3-2.
Seven minutes left in the contest Timpview knocked in another goal of a corner kick. Sudweeks dropped in a pass to the foot of Badger to give the Thunderbirds a two-goal lead 4-2.
From there Tooele battled hard to find last minute holes in the Timpview defense but fell short. The Buffaloes did suffer a handful of injuries that came from some rough tackling from the Timpview side but coach Ward is confident that her players will overcome those injuries.
Tooele now 1-4 in Region 7 play will travel to play Orem on Sept. 16, at 4 p.m.
