For an early season matchup between two baseball rivals, the Tooele and Grantsville game had it all. Everything from two blown leads in the seventh inning to controversial calls made by the umpires during the tense final moments of the game.
Tooele, who led 5-4 after six innings, then saw their lead disappear and even trailed in the bottom half, only to came back and win with a last at bat when a bobbled grounder scored two for the Buffaloes in a 7-6 come-from-behind victory Tuesday afternoon at Dow James Park in Tooele.
Taylor Hunt had a near perfect day from the plate by going 2-for-2 with an RBI single and double and drawing two walks while Matt Trussell also earned a single and an RBI double in the game.
Alex Childs saw the ball well from the plate for the Cowboys hitting doubles in his first two at bats. Benji Cole bounced back from a rough start in the first inning to pitch six strong innings and struck out seven in the game.
Grantsville started off the scoring in the first with a two-out double by Childs. Childs was brought around to score after Kort Fonger reached base on an error in center field.
The Cowboy lead didn’t last for long however. With Mitch Eyre and Colton Barkdull reaching base for Tooele with walks, Chase Banks came up two batters later and hit a liner that squeaked through the right side to give Tooele a 2-1 lead.
The scoring continued for the Buffs as Hunt sprayed a single to right field to score Banks then Trussell came up two batters later and found a hole in the right side of the infield to give Tooele their fourth run of the inning and an early 4-1 lead.
“We made Benji (Cole) throw more pitches than he should have,” said Grantsville baseball coach Loren Anderson. “He threw about 25 extra pitches because we didn’t make plays in the field.”
Staring down a 4-1 deficit, Grantsville slowly chipped away at the Tooele lead. Childs again started things off, this time in the third, with another double and reached third on a wild pitch. With Childs on third Fonger only had to hit a fly ball to the outfield and he did just that, scoring Childs to make the score 4-2.
Grantsville cut the lead to one when Payeton Reed doubled and was later brought around to score when Taylor Matthews smacked a single to right center to cut Tooele’s lead to 4-3.
While Cole was shutting down Tooele hitters from the mound from the second through fifth innings he got enough run support in the fourth inning to tie the game.
Boman earned a two-out single in the fourth and moved to second on a wild pitch. From there Childs reached first on an error and Boman hustled all the way around from second to make it home to tie the game at 4-4.
Tooele finally got something going again against Cole as Trussell started off the inning with a single and was brought around to score on a Matt Medina single through the right side of the infield to give the Buffaloes a slim 5-4 lead heading into the top of the seventh.
Grantsville knew that they needed a run or else the game would be over and Tyson Hutchins led off the inning with a clutch single to get the ball rolling. Hutchins then stole second and eventually made his way to third. From there Hutchins only had to watch as a wild pitch was enough to get him home to tie the game at 5-5.
“Confusion on the signal from pitcher to catcher caused the errant throw,” said Tooele head coach Danny Medina said.
The Cowboys weren’t content with just tying the game as Andrew Nelson came to the plate with Fonger at third and hit a grounder to the right side. The grounder took just enough time to score Fonger from third to give Grantsville their first lead since the first inning at 6-5.
Having just blown their lead, Tooele now had an opportunity to win it in the seventh. Steven Witkowski started off the inning after fouling off several pitches finally knocked a single through the left side of the infield to start the rally.
Two consecutive one-out walks helped Tooele load the bases but Childs, who came on in relief, struck out the next batter for the second out, only one out away from the Grantsville victory.
That Cowboy victory never came as Devin Park hit a grounder to the right side of the infield that was bobbled. Park beat out the throw at first, according to the umpire, and Tooele hustled around the basepaths to score two runs on the play to seal the come-from-behind victory.
“I thought we played really well besides a couple of plays here and there,” Anderson said.
Tooele will travel to Olympus on Friday to face the Titans at 4 p.m. while Grantsville hosts Davis on Saturday at 11 a.m.
