Some “needy” should be questioned

This is in response to the March 10 article in the Transcript-Bulletin, “Monthly food drops rise as economy sinks.” First, I would like to applaud Carrie Kline and the group of volunteers who give their time and energy. Also, the people at the organization who contribute time, money, food and make personal sacrifices to make programs like the Utah Food Bank and Tooele Food Bank as successful as they are. As I read the article, I was grateful that I am able to make ends meet at this time. I know there are families who truly depend on these programs to make it through each month. However, I couldn’t help notice all of the newer cars, trucks, vans and SUVs in the photo that accompanied the article. Some of the vehicles pictured sell for $65,000. I never claim to be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but if some of these folks can make high monthly car payments, they could afford their own groceries. That would leave the resources available for those who truly need them. As a people, we all have to re-evaluate what are truly needs and what are desires. If you are seeking strangers in your community to feed you, you may want to sell your expensive car and buy a more affordable form of transportation. If you don’t understand what words like starvation, real hunger and malnutrition mean, ask the people in line behind you what truly matters when the food you took left them with nothing.

I know some who goes to the food drop and have even given me some of the food since they were given more than they could use. It is not my place to judge if they should be taking food from the drop or not.

But I will say this, the food I have seen them get was not very fresh and some was starting to rot, so you had to sort through what was given to find the most edible food.

The way I figure it, is if you are willing to drive to the drop and wait an hour or more for the not so fresh food then you must really need it, or really like getting free stuff. Either way have at it.

I was wondering if you was confronted by some one that was at the food drop, what would you guy say to them. Some of those people could have been in a friends vehicle or a family member. It may be like the situation with mrewog. Somebody had drove them. Would you apologize for your nasty comments or would you stand by what you are saying. And if you have never been in those shoes you really don't have a right to say anything. "Judge onto others the way you want to be judged upon"

I drove a person to the food drop because they can’t afford to get their old car repaired or the insurance and gas. I didn’t get food but my car was there. I must have missed the $60,000.00 cars. My family donates to the food bank and the homeless shelter. I can imagine a family who have lost jobs and still have a good car until it gets repossessed, but they still need to eat. Maybe Steve Gilbert could inspect the people as the came in to look for signs of malnutrition before any food is given out. That way the food bank can save food for those that truly need it. Who knows we could even deny food to fat people. Maybe inspect their homes before they get any food. Steve Gilbert

I agree whole heartedly!! Sure everyone deserves food but if you show up in a brand new vehicle then it raises the questions of where your priorities lie. A nice new vehicle or food for your family. If you are struggling that much then sell the new vehicle get one that will get you from point A to point B and use the difference in money to feed your family. I find it hard to believe that everyone that shows up to these drops truly need the food. I know for a fact that if I were struggling to make ends meet i would re-evaluate my situation.

I think you have a valid point Mr. Steve Gilbert.

You don't have to have a lot of money in your checking account to get a vehicle. It is all about credit therefore I would agree with you that you are not the sharpest knife.

Food prices have risen drastically since the beginning of the gas rising problem. I have to say that even a rich man is entitled to food.

Also, you cannot judge a book by its cover. If you don't have food but have a car... please go to the food bank!!!
