An athletic full-court press that stifled the Ogden offense helped propel the Cowboys to an 18-7 first quarter advantage en route to a 49-32 victory in Ogden.
Kelsi Wells used seven fourth quarter points to earn the game-high 15 for Grantsville. Sammie Jensen followed with 13 and Marissa Robbins added nine in the win.
Having the whole week off didn’t develop any rust on the Cowboys’ offense. The tall guards helped cause havoc on the Ogden offense as the Tigers at times had trouble getting the ball across the halfcourt line.
Robbins scored six early points in the first including back-to-back fast-break layups which gave Grantsville an early 14-1 lead. Ogden finally got their first field goal of the game with 2:23 left in the first but the Cowboys held a commanding 18-7 lead after the first period.
Ogden came out in the second determined to keep Grantsville out of the paint and force outside shots. The plan work momentarily, as Grantsville took a number of outside shots that didn’t fall but the Tigers could not cut into the Cowboy lead.
Wells, Robbins and Jensen each had seven points at the half as Grantsville went into the locker room with a 27-16 lead.
Ogden came out strong with Olivia Newman knocking down two early baskets to spark a 6-0 run to get the game within 27-22 with 4:36 left in the third. Even though Grantsville didn’t start the quarter strong they sure finished like a team that is undefeated in region play.
Scoring the final nine points in the quarter, Grantsville was led by Jensen who knocked in six points in the final 4:04 of the quarter. The 9-0 run gave the Cowboys a 36-22 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Again Ogden came out firing, this time with Lizzy Heiner nailing two straight jumpers to cut the Grantsville lead to 10 at 36-26. And again the Cowboys finished strong as Ogden couldn’t get the game any closer.
Seven points from Wells was big in sealing the victory. Ashley Bartlett hit the jumper that started the scoring for Grantsville in the fourth and finished with four points in the quarter.
Grantsville continues their region play on Thursday when they host Logan for their last home game of the regular season at 7 p.m.
