Staff writer Jamie Belnap won first place for Best Feature Story for non-daily newspapers with a circulation between 6,000 to 9,999. The judges said her article, “A ride on the wild side,” (Dec. 27, 2007) about a Grantsville man who trains sled dogs, gave readers a good feel for mushing by using fast, tight writing.
Belnap received a first-place award from the Society of Professional Journalists Utah Headliners for the same article in June.
Community news editor Sarah Miley garnered a second-place award in the Best Breaking News Story category for her coverage of the flooding and mudslides following the Kimball Fire near Grantsville last summer (“After fire comes flood,” July 26, 2007). The judges said Miley’s article was an “important story for every resident of the community, and contained abundant information with excellent attribution.”
Photo editor Troy Boman won an honorable mention in the sports photography category for a March 20, 2007, photo of a Grantsville High School pitcher winding up during a baseball tournament. According to the judges, Boman won because “the eyes make the difference in the shot.”
The National Newspaper Association was established in 1885 to protect, promote and enhance America’s community newspapers. With 2,700 members, it is the largest newspaper association in the country.
