This is in reply to David Buhler’s opinion piece in the July 29 edition of the Transcript-Bulletin titled “SLCC phase out was in best interest of taxpayers.” He states in his article that the Utah College of Applied Technology provides skills training in Tooele County similar to Salt Lake Community College. If they are already here offering training in the same areas, then where can I find the location to take such classes? I am a mother of six children and my youngest is starting her first year in school. I am finally at a point in my life that I could return to employment. My hopes were to receive skills training as soon as possible and find good employment to help with our family’s income. The skills program I am currently enrolled in with Salt Lake Community College takes 715 hours to complete. If I were to take the same program through The Utah College of Applied Technology, it would take 1,110 hours. What was going to take me 18 months to complete will now take 28 months to complete. That is almost one more year of my life to complete the same training. My only choice that you have left me with is to drive into Salt Lake to continue with my skills training. With the cost of transportation to get into Salt Lake, you have added more financial burden on my family. I truly feel you did not get the facts on what Tooele citizens needed when you made your decision.
