Grantsville High School’s student body officers spent a chilly 24 hours from Monday to Tuesday on the “G” near the school’s football field in payment of a debt to the students they lead.

Last November, the officers challenged the school to donate 140 boxes to Operation Christmas Child, a program designed to give Christmas gifts to children in the developing world who might not otherwise receive any. If the students succeeded, the student body officers promised to spend stage the sit-out.

Eager to see the student body officers follow through on their agreement, the students and teachers at GHS donated 296 boxes.

True to their word, Marty Rueckert, Brooke Bakker, Kylee Jameson, Lauren Hill, Tommy Cook, Alyssa Roberts, Katelyn Souders and Sarah Anderson stocked up on treats and blankets as they geared up Monday for 24 hours together.

These eight didn’t have to face it alone, however. Student body advisors Liz Smith, Sandy Fraser, Mark Dexheimer and April Fenn all spent time chaperoning the students. The officers were also inundated with visitors.

Some of these visitors good-naturedly taunted the student body officers, others brought snacks, and one group even launched a sneak attack on the officers with water balloon as 3 a.m.

At any given moment, the officers were required to have a body part touching the “G.” They were, however, allowed to use bathroom passes when nature called.

Despite being cold and going home with slight sunburns, all of the officers reported having an enjoyable time.
