Don’t listen to derby critics

I am disappointed to hear criticism of Tooele County Search and Rescue over their handling of the demolition derbies. I feel this criticism is caused by a few cry babies that didn’t get their own way, and from a couple promoters that think they are the only ones that can put on a derby — or for that matter, be allowed to. These people even went as far as taking down our posters at the Riverton derby and then announced that our derby had been canceled. That is chicken, if you ask me. If you would like to see a good derby in Tooele then come and support us instead of those greedy promoters. We started the derby 15 years ago to raise money for equipment to help save lives, not to line our own pockets. We will see you at Halloween Havoc, because that is what we do: support our community.

Once again, the search and rescue is defending their demo derby. What were the rule changes? I remember the year(I was the announcer)when they got rid of the time limit, so that the sponsors cars could sandbag their way through to the finals. The search and rescue derby doesn't like Bruce or any other sponsor breathing down their necks. Your derbies got to be like pro wrestling, all staged.

I am so tired of hearing about these stupid derbies. I say cancel all of them run the prca rodeo during the fair instead of june this way we don't have to hear any more about this. every year no matter what the rules are and who in charge there are always problems. Someone is always getting a butt hurt over something. What a joke.

I see first hand the time and effort that goes behind these supposed promoters "lining their pockets". You have to look at this from another perspective instead of taking sides just because someone is an acquaintance-

Your claim that the Search and Rescue is there to "help save lives" loses ALL credibility once anyone with half a brain reads the ridiculous rules set forth by the S&R. If you really want to save lives you don't allow drivers to be out there while lacking SERIOUS safety features that these rules do not address.

I have never driven in Tooele, but have seen firsthand the cluster that comes from people inspecting cars that do not know what they are doing. What used to be good shows in Wyoming are now crap thanks to terrible promoters and inspectors. So, call it what you may about "lining the pockets", but ask anyone who has run or watched a Stirrindirt show and they will agree that these "greedy promoters" put butts in the seats and "line the pockets" of more people other than themselves. Vendors prosper, local businesses prosper, the fans prosper, and the drivers prosper.

Therefore, although on the outside your justification for the S&R is understandable, they are actually doing more harm than good for the entire town.

As for the "greedy promoters" comment, that is just blind stupidity. The claims against them about starting rumors about canceled shows and taking down signs is asinine. These promoters have successful jobs just like the S&R. Instead of fighting against it, why don't they be more like Logan and work WITH these "greedy promoters". Everyone gets their cut, but with their cut being more than what they would have gotten otherwise.

I, for one, will always appreciate what any S&R team does and what they do to keep people safe. However, in their haste to keep people safe OUTSIDE the arena, they need to stop and think about keeping people safe INSIDE the arena also...

"Stirindirtfan" you are Awesome!

What is a lot more cars to Bender? 5? 6? or 7?

I would like Rob Bender to comment on how many more cars will be there in Aug. over what wasn't there in June! Oh and don't count the side attraction figure 8 cars! They are not derby cars!!!

I was wondering if Ray Dixon personally attended the riverton derby? You know it is easy for Ray Dixon to come on here and make up story's about what happened at riverton! but for those who attended riverton's derby and heard no such thing being said by the announcer it really make you think about the integrity of Ray Dixon!

As For the Few "cry babies" I was one of the 22 drivers that petitioned to keep the same rules from the previous year, I am not sure of how many drivers there were total last year but, But when a majority of them say they will drive if they keep the same rules and boycott if they don't!

why would anyone in their right mind loose 22 drivers and think that they can survive! Do the math 22 drivers that didn't show this year 15 of them built cars to go out of tooele county or not come to tooele county, 7 of them didn't build any cars this year so far, 12 cars in June plus 15 is 27 cars! And maybe 18 cars in Aug. plus 15 is 33 cars, or say all 22 showed up that would have been 34 in June and 40 in august or maybe more!

I will be watching from the stands this year at the fair derby, rather than driving! which for me has not happened sense i started derbying!

Mr Dixon, if you support your local community, then you would have supported to keep the rules the same. Like Mr Dewyze has said, there is no derby without the drivers. After reading a past article with a driver by the name of jarrod lazenby on the front, I believe supporting your community would have meant supporting the petition that was signed by 80% of the past drivers. I don't know mr lazenby or any of the other drivers, but as you can see by June's results, there is not much success without a decent number of drivers, and the drivers that bring the most excitment. Also, you defame these other promoters, thats too bad. Sounds like they listen to the people that make these shows happen. Again, if you show so much support to your local community, you would have listened to it! Guess I will have to attend this Havoc derby to again, see what a real derby is, not a circle track race with a bunch of relatives waving at each other.

as far as the tooele search and rescue go when it comes to saving lifes i would not want anyone else in the state for that job they are true professinals at what they do. when it come to a demolition derby i would not want there opinion on how to put gas in my derby car let alone tell me how to build one to where it is safe for me to put my body and health on the line. The search and rescue do great things for the community but thay also spoiled one of the towns favorite events because they would not listen to the drivers.also if the search and recue boys think there rules are safe maybe they should build a couple cars to bring to the halloween havoc and prove there rules are safe.

If Ray Dixon is the voice of the Search and Rescue then the Search and Rescue has a lot to learn about petitioning support for their shows!

Calling local drivers names and accusing promoters of defaming their show (which is totally bogus) will cause the demies of what was a great demolition derby.

I know both sides of this story first hand, I was the head inspector last year for both demolition derbys in Tooele. The drivers this year did not want the rules to change but the Search and Rescue had their own agenda. They overlooked the most important thing, the drivers.

Why in the world would you kill the golden goose? The Search and Rescue would not listen to anything the local drivers had to say when they were approached about the new set of rules. This has cost them dearly!

The car count will be low for their shows unless something changes. The search and rescue must face the fact that it isn't how the money raised will be spent that makes a good show, it is the driver, the guy who spends time, personal money, and risks injury that makes the show good enough for the fans to fill the seats and be entertained.
