It is county fair time. The fair hearkens back to early days. It is a part of Americana, a social event, a contest, and a summertime tradition. It fills our innate urge to find out just how good we are, to compete and to show our stuff. It also means carnivals, shows, cotton candy, snow cones, gizmo sales, prize pigs and apple pie. It is displays and ribbons, contests, fine animals, pretty girls, pretty cars, entertainment, skydivers, rodeos, fireworks, a demolition derby and fun and games. And it means exhibits of the talents of the local folk young and old.

In the year of the “staycation,” it is the perfect addition to local summertime fun. There is plenty to do for several days and it is close to home. All events will be held at the Deseret Peak Complex on SR-112 (between Grantsville and Tooele) and Sheep Lane.

All day yesterday and again this morning, officials were busy taking in the prize work of will-be exhibitors for the competition, with various categories arriving at their appointed times. Judging has gone on its appointed times and fair officials have been helping set up the array of exhibits in eye-pleasing arrangements for the opening of the fair on Thursday.

Meanwhile the shows have gone on since the beginning last week with the horse shows, Miss Tooele County Pageant, and Little Miss Tooele County pageant. Don’t despair, there is more — much more — for everyone. The athletically inclined will stretch their legs at the 5K run, sports night or softball tournament. The musically inclined can croon to the tunes of the karaoke or dance to the beat at the dance/pool party. Fairgoers can thrill to the skills of the skydivers or Ooh and Ahh at the fireworks that light up the night sky for three nights running.

Watch the horses strut their stuff, come to the rodeo, watch the mid-air falls of the skydivers and enjoy the strains of the musicians at the shows.

Don’t overlook the exhibits. You may be amazed at the skills of local artists, writers, cooks, seamstresses, furniture makers, photographers and more. Browse through the exhibits any of the days.

Bring the kids to the petting zoo on Thursday morning and admire the animals at the stock show. Come back that night for the hometown heroes parade and stay on for the teen dance and pool party. Don’t give up before the fireworks light the night sky.

You won’t want to miss “Free Shirt Friday.” The petting zoo will remain open, and the fun zone, pony rides, and carnival run all day and into the night. Kids can hone their art skills at the art yard. Nothing is as American as baseball and the softball variation fills the bill quite nicely that evening. Skydivers will show their skills in the evening and the PCR bull riding / ranch rodeo comes in right after. And don’t forget the fireworks.

Want to join the 5K run? Sign up at 6:30 and start the race at 7 a.m. — before ol’ sol’s fire heats the air.

Buy an animal from the stock show. If you are more into machines than animals, you’ll love the car show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where the cars are worth a second and a third look. If junk cars are more your style, you’ll want to be on hand for the demolition derby where cars compete for their last hurrah before they hit the junk pile. It is a metal body grinding free-for-all type of driving where the object is to chase down and hit their opponents before they are finished off themselves.

Did you miss the skydivers on Friday or just need another look? Don’t miss out on Friday evening. Maybe fashion appeals more to you than old cars. If so, check out the work of the seamstresses and seamsters at the 4-H fashion show.

Oh, and did we mention fireworks? Stay on once more for the night time fairy shower.

Whatever your tastes or age there is bound to be something to entice you. Come one and all to join the fun. Come alone or in packs. It’s a family affair, so gather up your family and head to the fair.
