According to Lt. Lynn Bush of the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office, Steven Davis, 19, was driving his Chevy Cobalt southbound on Rowley Road at about 12:25 p.m. after leaving work at US Magnesium when he became distracted and failed to notice railroad crossing arms being lowered, signifying an approaching train.
When Davis’ attention was directed back to the roadway, it was too late for him to stop. He swerved to miss the crossing arms, crossed the tracks and went off the right side of the road, causing his vehicle to roll.
Davis was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and was ejected through the windshield. He was airlifted to University Hospital with a broken leg and multiple lacerations.
Bush said officers who responded to the accident believe Davis was traveling too fast.
