No reason to close

In regards to the Salt Lake Community College Skills Center closing, I have just recently finished my schooling with this school system and am getting frustrated over the way the teachers and students are being railroaded by the Salt Lake Applied Technology College and our local commissioners, who have decided that they have the right to say who can be in our area and where our citizens can go to college. They are taking away all of our rights. SLCC has been here for over 25 years with no problem with our local citizens. The new format is putting a block where there are only two choices in the Tooele area for our citizens to attend school, and I don’t think that is fair to either our citizens or the SLCC Skills Center that is in Tooele. I was really impressed by the article in the Tooele Transcript-Bulletin (“Let the free market work for education,” July 8) stating that we should have more choices, not less for where we can attend school. What do the commissioners think they are doing? There are a lot of students who are on fixed incomes and on Pell Grants and have no way of getting into Salt Lake to attend college without undo hardship on their families. The commissioners should have thought of all the consequences of their actions before deciding to close a great school.
