Miguel Esparza drilled a double to deep left-center field to open the seventh inning with the game tied at 2-2. Austin Hansen came on to pinch run for Esparza and reached third base on a ground out. Hansen was unable to advance on a ground out by Cody Lopez. But with two outs Trussell’s hit ended up just out of the reach of Cyprus’ left fielder and Hansen scored easily.
Zac Clausing pitched a complete game and had a shut out going through six and two-third innings. But a two-out single by the visitors tied the game going into the bottom of the seventh.
Junior Rodriguez continued his hot hitting from the Saturday’s all-star game with a double and a triple. He tripled with two outs in the first inning but his teammates could not bring him home.
Tooele scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning when Rodriguez doubled with one out and Clausing singled to bring him in. Chase Banks kept the rally alive with a single, but Cyprus turned a double play to end the inning.
Clausing got out of a jam in the sixth after walking the first two batters. He helped his own cause by snagging a ground ball firing to Matt Medina at second base who fired to Trussell at first for a double play.
Cyprus left a runner at third base when Medina made a good play at second for the final out of the inning and the shutout was still on for Clausing after six innings.
Medina ripped a triple to open the sixth inning and scored easily when Matt Gochis pounded a triple to deep left-center field and Tooele led 2-0 after six complete.
Clausing allowed only three hits in seven innings. Tooele scored three runs on nine hits.
Tooele played three more games last week losing 4-1 at Helper on Tuesday, winning 7-6 at home against Hunter on Wednesday in nine innings and posting a 5-2 victory on Friday against the Spartans.
Tooele 5, Spartans 2
Junior Rodriguez picked up the victory on the mound for Tooele against the Spartans with a complete game six-hitter.
Tooele scored twice in the opening inning when Medina doubled and scored on a double by Rodriguez. Banks then singled home Rodriguez. The Spartans tied the game by scoring a run in the first and a run in the fourth.
Tooele edged ahead in the sixth when Esparza doubled and later scored on a a single by Stewart Christensen.
Rodriguez helped his own cause in the seventh inning with a two-run blast over the center field fence with Gochis on board.
The Spartans rallied in the seventh with two men on, but their rally hopes were dashed when Banks gunned down a runner trying to steal third base.
Rodriguez finished the game with nine strikeouts.
Tooele 7, Hunter 6
(nine innings)
This game went extra innings with Tooele scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth to win.
Clausing singled to open the ninth and moved to second on a single by Banks. A sacrifice fly to right field moved Clausing to third base and he scored when the Hunter catcher sailed the ball over second base in an attempt to throw out Banks trying to steal. Christensen picked up the victory on the mound for Tooele.
Helper 4, Tooele 1
This game turned out to be a pitchers duel with Dustin Edgehouse getting the win for Helper by allowing only three Tooele hits. Clausing gave up only two earned runs in the game and Tooele committed four errors.
Helper opened with a run in the first, but Esparza threw out a runner at the plate to thwart and further damage. Helper added two more in the third and another in the fourth to make it 4-0.
Tooele scored its only run in the fifth inning. Lopez walked, Christensen singled Lopez to third and Trussell grounded out scoring Lopez.
Clausing had two hits in the game and Christensen one.
Tooele plays at Kearns Wednesday and at Taylorsville Friday.
