With half of Region 11 play already in the books, Grantsville boys basketball traveled to Ogden Friday where a win would be crucial to the standings.
But, the Cowboys came out of the gates flat to start the game and an improved third quarter was not enough to overcome a stale first half as Grantsville fell on the road 56-38.
“We didn’t shoot the ball very well at the beginning, missing inside and outside shots,” said Grantsville head coach Shane Heath. “We weren’t very aggressive at all.”
The Cowboys were led by Alex Childs who came up with 12 points followed up with 11 from Reggie Roberts. However, it wasn’t enough to get the victory from the Tigers, who were led by Nik Allred and his 12 points.
While the Cowboys came out flat, Ogden came out like a team hungry for their first win. Darinn Gomez led the Tigers with seven points in the first quarter as they jumped out to a quick 16-6 lead in the first.
Grantsville was getting their shots, however, they were not falling. With the missed shots piling up the Ogden lead expanded to 27-15 heading into halftime.
With some encouragement from Heath, Grantsville came out with more aggressiveness. Alex Childs led the way for the Cowboys with 10 third-quarter points to inject life into his team. The strong play from GHS helped cut the Ogden lead to only 35-29 heading into the fourth.
“I challenged Alex (Childs) to come out strong in the second half and he did,” Heath said.
Unfortunately, the Tigers countered with some aggressive play of their own on their home court. In fact, Ogden outscored Grantsville 21-9 in the final eight minutes of play to cruise to their first win in region. Allred helped pace the Tigers with seven fourth quarter points.
Coach Heath mentioned the importance of each game and how difficult the path will be. “We have our work cut out for us with the remaining games,” Heath said.
Grantsville will continue region play by hosting Ben Lomond Wednesday in another important game for Region 11 standings at 7 p.m.
