A Kaysville man who worked as a resident supervisor at Alpine Academy in Erda has been charged with raping one of the school’s female students.

Jonathan Carver, 29, was a house parent at the residential counseling program, which specializes in helping girls with behavioral or emotional issues. He was responsible for the daily tracking, well-being and safety of the 17-year-old victim, who lived at the academy for several months during 2008.

Carver began having sexual relations with the victim in October 2008, according to a probable cause statement. Most of the time the sex acts happened in the academy’s recreation room when no one was around. Other times they occurred in Carver’s bedroom or shower when his wife, who lived at the facility with Carver, was away.

Carver also reportedly took advantage of the girl in a parking lot at the Salt Lake International Airport after dropping off several other girls who were flying home for visits. The victim was also scheduled to go home that day, but her flight was later than the others, the probable cause statement said.

After the victim completed the program at the academy and returned home, her father contacted authorities because he was concerned about the ongoing communication between Carver and his daughter, according to Alpine Academy program director Janet Mulitalo, who oversees all operations at the school. That’s when police initiated an investigation into possible criminal behavior.

During a police interview, the victim identified over 20 occasions in which Carver engaged in sexual intercourse with her. Carver allegedly asked the girl not to speak with law enforcement about the relationship, according to court documents.

Carver was charged with four counts of rape, two counts of forcible sodomy — all first-degree felonies — and tampering with a witness, a third-degree felony. During his first appearance Wednesday morning in 3rd District Court, he was appointed a public defender to represent him. Judge Stephen Henriod set bail at $100,000, cash only.

Tooele County Deputy Attorney Gary Searle said that while 17-year-olds can legally consent to sex, in this case the acts amount to rape because of Carver’s position. Carver did not use force on the girl, but severely abused his role as her guardian.

The charges came as a shock to Alpine Academy officials, which employ strict rules to ensure the safety of the nearly 50 students in their care, Mulitalo said.

“The staff is never to work alone,” she added. “If any of the allegations are true, it’s clear to me that he was not operating based on the job requirements that were outlined.”

Mulitalo said when the academy was contacted by a detective from the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office regarding the investigation into Carver’s behavior in mid-March, the academy immediately put Carver and his wife on administrative leave. After a brief internal investigation, Carver was fired. His wife, although not thought to be complicit in Carver’s alleged crime, was also released because the position was for a resident couple, Mulitalo said.

“It’s our policy that we hire them as a couple so they leave as a couple,” Mulitalo said.

Carver and his wife began work at the academy in June 2008. Carver passed a background check, and regular supervision from administrative teams and monthly interviews conducted with students never gave any cause for concern, Mulitalo said.

“We were not aware prior to being notified by the police department that there was reason to be concerned,” she said.

The Carvers’ vacant positions have been filled and the academy believes all danger has been removed.

“We feel very confident about the safety of all the other students in our care,” Mulitalo said. “When DCFS [state Division of Child and Family Services] investigated they interviewed all the girls and no others made allegations against him. We don’t believe anyone else was victimized.”

Carver’s case is one of several in Tooele County in recent years involving teachers or educational workers sexually abusing students.

Former Tooele High School employee Leslie Baird pled guilty to having sex with two teenage students multiple times in 2006 and was sentenced to a year in the Tooele County Jail. Baird, however, only served half of that time due to good behavior before being released into home confinement.

Cameo Patch, another Tooele School District employee, was also arrested in 2006 for having sex with a male student. Patch was sentenced to 36 months probation.

Christopher Burton, a former East Elementary School third-grade teacher, was arrested in March 2007 after it was reported that he had molested eight boys in his class. He is currently serving an eight- to 30-year prison sentence.

Curtis Crittenden, the former head of 4-H in Tooele County, was arrested in June 2007 after a young Latino boy confided to his soccer coach that he had been molested by Crittenden while attending a sleep-over at Crittenden’s Tooele home earlier that month. An investigation that was later launched revealed six victims, all Spanish-speaking boys from Wendover, who were abused during similar circumstances. During a parole hearing recently, Crittenden also admitted to abusing eight more boys while serving as a missionary for the LDS Church and while attending Utah State University in Logan. Crittenden is currently serving out a six- to 30-year prison sentence.

Carver will appear in court next on May 19.

Jonathan Carver is now a convicted child molester that is not an opinion. Neither is the FACT that Jonathan Carver was creepy pig around more than one kid over there. The fact that Jonathan is using his time going around and trying to sway public opinion before his upcoming sentencing only goes to show he has absolutely no remorse and will offend again unless the courts do something to stop him. Alpine Acadamy is not to blame for a Jonathan Carver. Alpine does great work and our family owes them a great debt of gratitude. Your screen name says it all. Shhh!!!

Just keep it down while I rape your kids!! Not likely. There are plenty of men just like you where you are going Jonathan. Soon it will be your turn to Shhh!

AlpineFather, Your conclusions are based out of opinion and on what other people are saying, not from fact. It's amazing that you write "you have heard all the stories and yet you still let your daughter attend there?

He is being charged for what he did wrong, and there is no excuse he could use to excuse what he did. But you have NO right to add to those charges because your upset. You don't know what went on at Alpine, and should not be adding to this situation without proof.

Jonathan Carver is a convicted child rapist. His actions were not limited to "just one child" and he needs to be put away for a very long time. As the father of a student that needs Alpine Acadamy to get her life on track it is very important to me that Jonathan Carver is punished to the greatest extent possible. Alpine Acadamy is very expensive and for some, this is our only shot at getting our kids right before they are 18 and beyond parental control. What Carver did was evil and betrayed our trust. He not only raped one of our kids but he made advances towards almost every girl in that house. I heard the stories with my very own ears.

With all the people running around Alpine, Never a moment alone with anyone, how could he possibly have done all that is being said? I don't know, I think that there is alot of information being with held. Anyone that has worked or even visited Alpine would know that being alone is almost impossible and if you are alone it's never long enough to have sex.

hduknuku:

why should we believe anything you say if you can't even get your facts right? no where does shadowman1212 say he's a friend of this supposed "victim" on Facebook or hint at any sort of relationship at all with her.

Also, how can you say whether or not there was sex, he still raped the "victim?" That makes absolutely no sense. If there was sex... then the courts would need to determine if it was rape or not, but if there was no sex, there was certainly no rape.

to Shadowman1212:

I cannot confirm that you are who I believe you might just be; however, if you are, you'll understand this: Being friends on facebook with the victim is inappropriate. Please, I ask for her sake, to end that friendship.

to all of you:

i was there. whether or not he did engage in sexual intercourse with this girl, his relationship was completely inappropriate. He did not perform his job well; he crossed the line. There are boundaries between houseparent and student/patient.

regardless of the fact that she was seventeen, he clearly took advantage of her. his position is to act as guardian, not boyfriend. The relationship does consist of honest communication and trust, however, he abused her trust. She was a confused girl, and was not mentally mature enough at the time to consent to anything. She easily grew to trust those who were kind to her and did not reprimand her appropriately, which Jon Carver did not. Certain consequences are necessary in certain situations, and he did not meet those consequences, and instead was lenient. He allowed her to partake in activities when she had not earned such privileges, a basic foundation to the Alpine treatment center.

He did not do his job; he raped a child.

Woops! My bad. In that case, I agree with shadowman1212...and I'd rather agree with someone than disagree.

moshnee, thanks for sticking up for me. I believe that shadowman1212 was trying to say don't post a story without giving both sides. I am anxious to get this case resolved.

mislightning: The two cases aren't even remotely comparable. That other case involved multiple little kids who didn't know any better, this one deals with one willing 17 year old (almost adult and, if it actually happened, I think she's equally responsible).

Give the court system a chance to work and hopefully determine the truth before making judgements against someone you don't know in a situation you don't know all the details of.

The people you would never expect commit the most hanious crimes.

However; prosecutors only care about a conviction to pad the resume. They will lie, cheat, and stretch the truth to futher their careers.

It's a simple concept, no convictions, no job.

I doubt this is the whole story because that would not be juicy enough to bring out the pitchforks and give us the chance to say at least I'm not like them. If he had the last name Patch and was a woman, he would walk. Why do women have affairs with children and men molest them? Women molest children also, more frequent than you will ever know.

Shadowman1212,

I think that's why ldsprincess said "DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR"...because there is always more to the story.

I have known Jon for 13 years and I believe he's innocent because I know his character. I do not know the girl involved. This kind of abuse is certainly awful. The girl was getting help in Alpine Academy so there is a chance she's not telling the whole truth.

People are wrongfully accused/convicted every day in this country. If he's innocent, it's a real shame that he and his family is dragged through the mud for a story based on a lie.

I just hope that whoever is not being honest, that they get the proper help.

To add to ldsprincess, you should get the full story before posting something. I am a family member of the accused and this is not the whole side.

in the public eye and in the eye of the prosecuter your guilty till proven guilty

in the courtroom your innocent till proven guilty

Unfortunetly, they print a story like this he will be guilty until proven innocent, everyone will just assume the worst...very unfair but that is how the majority of society works. There is never any thought about "what if he is innocent". It's too bad, if he is innocent his life and his families is already ruined!

I have learned from this story: DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR! As a personal friend of Jon's, it is hard to imagine him doing these things that he is accused of.

I know Jon to be a good friend and listener and I'm sure that he excelled at t5his job.

Assuming that he's innocent, it is a shame for a girl and her father to ruin the reputation and lives of these awesome people.
