After leading the entire game against Mountain View in Orem on Tuesday, Tooele fell behind for the first time 39-37 with six minutes left in the contest. It was only a temporary setback for the Buffaloes who then outscored the Bruins 19-7 in the final minutes of the game to win 56-46.

It was the second straight win for the Buffaloes who edged Grantsville last Friday.

“I’m really impressed with the chemistry of this team,” said Tooele coach Ray Brazier. “Anytime a team gets down in the fourth quarter and comes back strong like they did it’s very positive. These kids want to compete and want to improve their execution on offense and defense.”

Tooele’s team chemistry was impressive with four players scoring in double figures. Jake Holt fired in 16 for the game with two three-point baskets while Wade Memmott ripped the nets for 13, Baylon Horrocks scored 12 and Travis Brady added 10. Memmott and Brady also connected on three-point shots.

“Those four players Horrocks, Memmott, Holt and Brady all took turns scoring at the right time,” the coach said. Brazier was particularly pleased with the inside shooting of Horrocks who had a high shooting percentage for the night.

The Buffaloes were also able to hold Mountain View shooting guard Taylor Warner to 16 points, eight points below his 24 points-per-game average. The coach said Brady, Cory McKendrick and Jarrett Groskreutz took turns guarding the sharpshooter.

Trailing 39-37, Memmott drilled a three-pointer to put the Buffaloes back on top at 40-39 with 5:28 left in the game. After three free throw makes by Brady, Horrocks nailed a short jumper to put the Buffs up 45-41 with 3:15 remaining.

A nifty inbound pass under the basket from Brady to Horrocks for a score kept the margin at four for the Buffaloes at 47-43 with just under two minutes remaining.

In the fourth quarter the Bruins’ Warner started to heat up; he scored 9 of his 16 in the final quarter. Warner nailed a trey after a Tooele turnover to slice the Buffs’ lead to 47-46.

In the final minute of play, Tooele played strong defense and hit nine of their final 10 foul shots to widen the final score to 56-46. The Buffaloes shot well from the foul line hitting 70 percent of their shots. They also were slightly better in field goal shooting percentage at about 39 percent compared to 32 percent from the field against Grantsville.

The Buffaloes started fast connecting on back-to-back three-point shots from Brady and Holt almost in the same location angle-left for a quick 6-0 lead. With 5:20 remaining in the first quarter Holt drained his second trey from the left side and Tooele led 10-2.

Mountain View called time-out and employed a full-court zone press, but the Buffs handled it and led 14-8 after one quarter.

Mountain View sliced the lead to 16-14 in the second quarter until Levi Vernon sank an 18-footer followed by three-point basket from Memmott to keep the slight lead at 21-16. The Bruins cut it to two points and Vernon scored inside to give the Buffs a 25-21 half-time advantage.

Tooele’s largest lead of the game came with 2:08 left in the third quarter when Memmott was fouled while shooting a three-point shot. He hit two of the three foul shots to make it 37-28. Tooele led at the end of the third quarter 37-30.

The Buffs’ lead quickly disappeared at the start of the final quarter when the Bruins hit back-to-back three points shots and then scored a three-point play the old-fashioned way for nine quick points and a 39-37 advantage over the Buffs. Tooele then went on the 19-7 run to pull out the victory.
