There were few highlights for the home team Friday night at Stansbury High School in the Stallions’ 38-7 loss to the East Leopards.
After East jumped ahead 17-0 with 7:42 left in the second half, Stansbury put together its only scoring drive of the night.
Ivan Sanchez returned the ball 24 yards to the Stansbury 35 with the help of a good block from Jazz Knightan. Then E.J. Jones scooted to the 41 followed by a run from by Payeton Reed to the Stansbury 49.
The Stallions kept the drive alive with a pass from Ryan Hunt to Jones down to the East 43 and then made first down on a fourth-down play when Jones ran to the 35.
Stansbury advanced the ball to the East 32, but a 4-yard loss and incomplete pass gave them a fourth-and-11 at the East 36.
After a Stansbury timeout, Hunt found Darius Lopez wide open in the middle of the field for a 38-yard touchdown pass to slice the Leopards’ lead to 17-7 with 2:16 left in the opening half.
Stansbury tried an onside kick which gave East good field position with time running out in the first half, but Sanchez intercepted an East pass to thwart the Leopards’ attempt to expand their lead in the opening half.
The Stallions came out fired up in the second half with some strong defensive plays by Sanchez, Austin Butler and Derrek Christensen to force East to punt from its own 20.
Stansbury was able to drive inside East territory to the Leopards’ 40, but this time the Stallions could not convert on a fourth down with two yards to go and the ball went back to the Leopards.
Stansbury held the Leopards in check for three downs, but on fourth-and-six East quarterback Tanner Curtis connected on a pass play to Mason Garcia down to the Stansbury 17. Four plays later, the Leopards were into the end zone for a score to push the lead to 24-7 with 1:09 left in the third quarter.
East added two more touchdowns in the final quarter on a 56-yard run by Ed Fakahafua and a 22-yard run by Ben Borstadt.
The Leopards struck first in the game on a 38-yard field goal by Daniel Osguthorpe in the first quarter to make it 3-0.
Gareth Anderson picked off an East pass early in the second quarter and returned it 17 yards to the Stansbury 46, but the offense gained only three yards and was forced to punt the ball at midfield. East’s Angel Castellanos took the punt at his own 31 and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown to give the Leopards a 9-0 advantage.
Stansbury ended the game with 41 rushes for 73 yards while East rushed 28 times for 213 yards. Anderson ran the ball 13 times for 44 yards while Jones gained 37 yards on 10 carries and Reed picked up 22 yards on eight carries but missed the second half because of a concussion.
Lopez ended up with 10 tackles from his safety position while Colton Anderson and Timothy Juvera had six tackles each and Butler was credited with three tackles. Christensn and Hunter Anderson each had quarterback sacks.
Stansbury has a bye on Friday and will host Highland on Sept. 25.
