Having lost to Bear River in five sets when they played them in Garland earlier in the year, the Grantsville volleyball team was looking for revenge on their own court Tuesday night.
After winning the first two games it looked like the Cowboys were going to get out with an easy region victory but the Bears came storming back to win the following two to force a decisive fifth set.
Grantsville recovered in the fifth to take the 3-2 victory by the score of 25-23, 25-16, 24-26, 13-25 and 15-9.
Kelsi Wells and Winter Johnson teamed up for a total of 26 kills. The Grantsville serve was their best weapon as Jordan Conrad and Ashley Wilson each had seven aces in the victory. The Cowboys are also fighting through losing a couple players to sickness.
Coach Heidi Heath mentioned that her team did a lot right during the first two games. “Our passing was great and our serving was really a weapon,” Heath said.
Those weapons helped edge out the first game 25-23 but then the second set came easier for the Cowboys, winning 25-16.
Grantsville even came out strong in the third set but was nipped by the Bears 24-26 to force a fourth set. The fourth was a low point in the match for Grantsville.
“We did a lot of tipping the ball in the fourth,” Heath said. “When we hit it hard we are much better.” The Cowboys let the fourth slip away but were able to come back in the fifth to seal the victory.
The win over the Bears is huge in terms of Region 11 play. With only three matches remaining, Grantsville will take any win they can get to improve their standing.
The Cowboy’s next home game will be Tuesday against Juan Diego at 6:30 p.m.
