Grantsville baseball
Grantsville evened its region record at 3-3 with an 8-7 loss Friday at Bear River. The Bears now lead the league with a 5-0 record. Grantsville led 4-2 until the Bears unloaded with five runs in the third and another in the fifth to go up 8-4. Grantsville came back to add three runs in the final inning, but it was not enough. The Cowboys collected seven hits including doubles by Kort Fonger and Taylor Matthews. Grantsville plays at Morgan today and hosts Ben Lomond on Thursday.
Grantsville girls golf
Grantsvilles girls team had a rough time at the challenging Logan River Golf Course, placing sixth. Kylie Erickson lead the Cowboys with a 114, while Kylee Palmer and Paislee Painter follow up with a 120 and 129 respectively. Grantsville is now tied for fifth place in Region 11.
Umpires needed
The Tooele County Babe Ruth League needs umpires for the upcoming season. Those interested should contact league president John Wright at 850-0504 for more information. An umpire clinic is scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m. at the Tooele County Health Building at 151 N. Main. Clinics will include the discussion of Official Baseball Rules, local League Rules and becoming certified. Anyone interested in umpiring for the 2008 season is encouraged to attend. Softball clinic
Tooele County Thunder softball is holding its annual softball clinic for girls ages 6-12 on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Instruction will be given on hitting, fielding, base running and pitching. Space is limited so sign up now. The clinic will be held at the Tooele City swimming pool park. In case of inclement weather it will be held at the Dow James City Complex. Karting
The second round of the Snap-on Stars of Karting will offer 10 lucky karters the opportunity to sample a form of motorsports that many of them hope will be in their future. Formula BMW America has arranged to allow 10 drivers that were born prior to December 31, 1993 the opportunity to test the Formula BMW FB02 race car on Friday. The event will take place after the on-track racing activity has concluded for the karters and will take place on the 2.24 mile Eastern Circuit. In order to be eligible for inclusion for the test, the participants must register for the opportunity by this Friday. The 10 winning drivers will be notified on Monday. The event will include a late afternoon classroom session and seat fitting Thursday.
Indy winner coming to MMP
Former Indianapolis 500 winner and two-time CART champion Gil de Ferran announced he will race at Miller Motorsports Park in the LMP2 class as part of the 2008 American Le Mans Series. Team owner and driver de Ferran will team up with 23-year-old ex-Champ Car Atlantic champion Simon Pagenaud for the remainder of the 2008 American Le Mans Series, starting at the fourth round of the championship at MMP.
Hunting Permits
If you applied for a 2008 Utah big game hunting permit, your wait is almost over. By April 30, you'll know whether you drew a permit. "If you draw a permit, congratulations" says Judi Tutorow, wildlife licensing coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. "If you don't, mark June 12 on your calendar. That's when general bull elk permits go on sale. It's also the day that any general buck deer permits that aren't taken in the draw go on sale." Utah's 2008 Big Game Draw will be conducted this month. If you applied for a 2008 permit, you should receive an e-mail and a letter by April 30. The e-mail or letter will let you know whether you drew a permit. If you don't receive an e-mail or a letter by April 30, you can learn whether you drew a permit by logging onto the DWR's Web site or by calling 1-800-221-0659.
