Tooele

Essay contest

The Tooele County Chapter of the Daughter of the Utah Pioneers is sponsoring an essay contest for all fourth-grade students who attend any of the seven Tooele City elementaries or Vernon Elementary. The students have been asked to write an essay on any of the following subjects: A pioneer ancestor; a historic Tooele County place; a historic Tooele County event; a historic Tooele County individual. Essays are due at their respective schools no later than March 15. For additional information and guidelines, please contact your of the fourth-grade teacher.

SL Community Action

Looking for a chance to be involved in your community? Join the Salt Lake Community Action Program Board of Directors. Openings are now available for low-income representation. Petitions for membership can be picked up at the Tooele office, 38 S. Main St. A community forum and election will be held on Tuesday, March 18, at 7 p.m., at the Head Start building at 22 N. Coleman St., Tooele. The election will be held from 6 to 9 p.m.

Family/parenting workshops

"Guiding Good Choices," a family/parenting workshop for parents with kids ages 9-15, meets Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m., through April 8. No classes will be held during spring break. Cost is $15 (waiver available if needed). Call Tooele City Hall to register at 843-2185.

Special Olympics

The Tooele County Giants, a Special Olympics team, is now getting ready to start practice for track and field events. Join us Saturday, March 29, at 10 a.m., for practice at the GHS track. Anyone 8 and older with a physical and/or mental disability is encouraged to be part of our team. After practice we will meet at Grantsville City Park and celebrate with a barbecue. Deseret Peak Indoor Arena

Caregiver guide classes

The next U-Care Caregiver Guide class will be held Tuesday, March 11, at the Tooele Senior Center, 59 E. Vine St. The class will be about "assisting your loved one with personal cares." Blood drive

Mountain West Medical Center is having a blood drive on Tuesday March 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital, 2055 N. Main St. Contact the human resources department at 843-3750 to set up a time.

Home buyers workshop

A Home buyers Workshop will be provided by Prudential Utah Real Estate on March 18, at 7 p.m., at 205 N. Main St. This will be a great opportunity for first time home buyers to learn the ins and outs of home ownership in a casual, conversational environment. Admission is free but seating is limited. Overlake homeowners meeting

The Overlake Homeowners Association annual meeting originally scheduled for Thursday, March 20, has been moved to Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m., at the old Tooele County Courthouse, 47 S. Main St. All Overlake homeowners and interested residents are invited to attend. Notification of the meeting will be sent to each homeowner in the upcoming newsletter. Stansbury Park

SP Golf Association

The Stansbury Park Golf Association will be having their annual spring membership meeting on Wednesday, March 19, at 6:30 p.m., at the Stansbury Golf Course Pro-Shop. A vote will be held for the proposed change for the association. For more details visit the pro-shop.

Riding Club

The Stansbury Riding Club will hold registration on March 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grantsville City Hall.

Grantsville

Old Folk Sociable

Grantsville Old Folks Sociable will be held Saturday, March 29, at Grantsville High School. Tickets are $15 in advance or $17 at the door. The car show will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., honored guest reception at noon, honored guest dinner at 1 p.m., program at 2, 4, or 6 p.m., dancing from 4 to 11:30 p.m., and a 5K run at 10 a.m. Tickets will be presold at Casa del Rey, Grantsville City Hall, Handy Corner, Soelberg's, Way Station, Williams Family Video, the Transcript-Bulletin and Walgreens. THS class of 1963

School enrollment

The Tooele County School District will be accepting applications from elementary and secondary students who are interested in enrolling in a school outside of his/her resident school boundary for the 2008-2009 school year. Applications will be accepted through March 30 and are available at all schools or at the district office.

THS Class of '98 Reunion

Lions-Quest Skills

Does your child attend 6th grade at a Tooele City school? Johnsen Community Council

THS Class of 1968 Reunion

The Tooele High School Class of 1968 will be holding a planning meeting for their 40th year class reunion on March 17, at 7 p.m., in the basement of the Tooele County Building, 47 S. Main St. Any and all classmates are invited to attend. The reunion has been scheduled for June 21, at Legion Park in Settlement Canyon. St. Patrick's Day games

Join us for St. Patrick's Day fun with a few games. For the "Hidden Treasure," see if you can locate all the gold coins. Fill out the number you found on the "Pot-o-Gold" sheet and get a prize. This game is for children ages 3 to age 6, and will run though March 27. Then test your knowledge with our "St. Patrick's Quiz." The answers are in plain sight at the library. Bring you quiz sheet to the front desk and receive your prize. This game is for ages 7 through 12.

Wednesday at the Movies

Our Wednesday at the Movies will feature the movie "High School Musical 2," shown on March 12, at 3 p.m., in the community room. Then Movies at Your Library will be "Cat in the Hat" on March 18, at 4 p.m. Our Morning Movie at Your Library is "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day" on March 13, at 11:30 a.m. Be sure to see the movie, then read the book. Sign-up and get your ticket today. Tickets are free and will be available for each movie at the check out desk of the Tooele City Library. If you don't have a ticket, show up any way.

Special story time

A special story time on Friday, March 21, at 1 p.m., will feature Biscuit. Listen to some very funny stories about Biscuit, read by Angie Wager from the Barnes and Noble in Jordan Landing, and see our special guest Biscuit! Coloring sheets with Biscuit will be given out.

Tooele Library Board

There will be an open meeting of the Tooele City Library Board on March 12, at 7 p.m., at the library.

Education

Adult Education

Get your high school diploma this year! All classes required for a high school diploma, adult basic education, GED preparation, word processing, driver's education and English as a second language are available. Register now to graduate -- just $35 per semester. The center is located at 76 S. 1000 West, and can be reached at 833-1994. Adult education classes are for students 18 and over.

GED prep

The Tooele Adult Education Center is offering a GED preparation class on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. The class will start March 26 and end May 7. Cost is $35. High school credit may be earned at the same time you are preparing to pass the GED and five credits can be added to your high school transcript once the GED is passed. Our center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 a.m. and Monday and Thursday nights from 4 to 8 p.m. Call 833-1994 for additional information.

Take the GED

The GED test will be given on April 8, starting at 8 a.m. Please contact Andrea at 833-1994 by April 4. You must pre-register for the test.

English as a second language

ESOL conversational classes are held Monday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. ESOL students may come anytime, the Tooele Adult Education Center is open for individualized study with our software programs and textbooks. Registration is $35 per semester.

Reverse mortgage class

A free reverse mortgage class will be held Thursday, March 13, at 4:30 p.m., at the Tooele City Library. Call 882-0355 with questions. Free books will be provided for everyone.

Worship and Sunday School

Mountain of Faith Lutheran Church welcomes everyone to join us for Sunday School at 10 a.m. for junior high and high school students, and at 9:45 a.m. for adults. Prayers Around the Cross

Mountain of Faith Lutheran Church is sponsoring a Taize Prayer service every Sunday evening of Lent, at the St. Barnabas Center, 1784 N. Aaron Dr. in Overlake. Service will be at 6 p.m. preceded by a soup dinner at 5 p.m. Call 882-7291 for more information.

Church of Christ

The undenominational Church of Christ, 430 W. Utah Ave., will have a study group Wednesdays at 7 p.m. The topic will be God, The Bible and Common Sense. Brit Ammi Messianic

Brit Ammi Messianic Congregation meets every Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at 37 N. Main St. (enter from the parking lot behind the old Mantes building) in Tooele. St. Patrick's Day dinner

St. Marguerite's Knights of Columbus will be having their annul St. Patrick's Day dinner on Saturday, March 15, at 6:30 p.m., following the mass. Luncheon canceled

Please note that the North Stake singles luncheon usually held on the third Saturday of each month will not be held this Saturday, March 15, due to our Stake Relief Society Conference being held this month. Please join us again in April and each month thereafter at the 3rd-18th ward building.

Fireside

All singles and married couples are invited to a fireside on Sunday, March 16, at 7 p.m., sponsored by the Tooele North Stake. Please note that our firesides have been moved to the 3rd-18th ward building, 141 W. Utah Ave., until further notice, during the remodeling of the North Stake Center. Please wear Sunday dress. A nursery will be provided for your children.

Charity

Food pantry

The First Baptist Church in Tooele is offering a clothing closet and emergency food pantry to help meet the needs of our community. Anyone with clothing needs -- adults and children -- are welcome. The food pantry is available for emergency needs. Hours of operation are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. We are located at 580 S. Main St., Tooele. For more info call 882-2048.

Charity luncheon

The Ladies of the Elks will host their annual charity luncheon on Saturday, April 5, at 11:30 a.m., at the Elks Lodge, 61 N. Main St. BBQ ribs and all the fixings, entertainment, great door and raffle prizes. Lunch is $10. Raffle tickets are available at the Elks. Contact Jane Gillis at 833-0909 for more information and to purchase tickets. Proceeds will be split between Camp Wapiti and our nursing scholarship program.

Eagles

White elephant auction

On Saturday, March 15, Kevin and Barbara Denner will chair the epilepsy fund activity, a white elephant auction. PWSP Gene Bennett will be the auctioneer. Pulled pork sandwiches with salad, chips and dessert will be served at 6 p.m., at a cost of $5 per person. The auction will follow with all proceeds going to the epilepsy fund for the Madam President's Project. If you have an item that can be auctioned off, bring it to the lodge.

Friday Night Steaks

The Eagles will serve steak, shrimp, halibut or chicken dinners from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. Please come out, enjoy dinner and support your Aerie and Auxiliary.

Groups

Kiwanis meetings

Kiwanis meets every Tuesday at noon at Tracks, 1641 N. Main St., Tooele. Contact John Brown at 843-0711.

Vietnam Veterans

There will be an organizational/information meeting of the Tooele County Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America to be held on March 13, at 7 p.m., in the meeting room of the Utah Pioneer Museum, 35 E. Vine St., Tooele. Please park in the rear parking lot and enter via the back door. The VVA is open to all Vietnam Era veterans, you did not have to serve in-country. Historical Society

Professor Mark Welsh will present "The War of 1812 -- The Pivotal War" at The Tooele County Historical Society's next meeting on March 11, at 7 p.m., at the Pioneer Museum, 47 E. Historical Society

The Tooele County Historical Society will have two books available for purchase at our March 11 meeting: The History of Tooele County Volume II for $25, and The Mining, Smelting, and Railroading in Tooele for $15. We will also have a package of eight note cards that depict historical sites around the valley for $4. Please contact Alice Dale at 882-1612 if you are interested in purchasing any of these items.

Sewing Guild

Our next meeting will be held March 12, at 9:30 a.m., at the Extension Office. It will be a continuation of our project started in January. If you weren't there you are still welcome to come to this meeting. Come and see what we do, bring a friend and bring any "show and tell" you have. For more information call Geri Thomas at 882-3487.

American Legion

The American Legion will hold a meeting on March 12, at 7 p.m. in the National Guard Armory. The purpose of the meeting is to elect officers and to establish upcoming meeting times in Tooele.

Quilt Guild

The Tooele County Quilt Guild will meet March 18, at 9:30 a.m., in the Extension Office auditorium. We will be making a string spider quilt and sewing charity quilts tops. We will exchange yellow and orange nine-patch blocks. Bring a potluck dish and plan to stay a long as you can. Bring sewing machine and basic sewing kit. Any Questions call Virginia at 882-0461.

St. Patrick's Day dinner

The Ladies of the Elks will host a St. Patrick's Day dinner on Monday, March 17, at 6 p.m., at the Elks, 61 N. Main St., Tooele. Dinner will be $6 per plate. To-go plates will be available. Please RSVP by calling 882-2408.

Moose Lodge

The Moose Lodge in Tooele regularly hosts Thursday night dinners for $5. On March 17, the lodge will host a St. Patrick's Day dinner with corned beef and cabbage, Irish music and free pool. The event will start at 6 p.m. Cost is $5. On Saturday, March 22, the lodge will host an Easter egg hunt from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday night fish and chips dinners are held at 6 p.m. Free pool. Saturday night rib-eye steak dinners are held from 6 to 9 p.m. This is a smoke free environment. Come out and enjoy yourself at the Moose Lodge.

UFAN meeting

UFAN Tooele County Chapter meeting will be held on March 19, at 6:30 p.m., at the Tooele City Library, 128 W. Vine St. Join us in sharing Easter holiday ideas, recipes and ways to have a safe and fun family holiday. TooeleMommies

You're invited to our open house on March 15 from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Pratt Aquatic Center balcony. ALL moms welcome. Tooelemommies.com is a free support group for Tooele Valley moms, with over 120 members and counting! Meet local moms, door prizes, free Refreshments, free goodie bags. Come find out what TooeleMommies is all about. Bring your mommy friends with you.

NARFE meeting

The Tooele Chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will meet on Friday, March 14, at 1 p.m. at the Pioneer Museum, 35 E. Vine St., Tooele (enter from the north parking lot). Our special guest speaker will be a representative form the county health department, who will discuss the disposal of medical waste. Friday Night Entertainment begins at 5:30 p.m.

AARP will begin preparing taxes for senior citizens on Thursdays through April 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come in or call 882-2870 for an appointment.

Check Your Health Services -- Foot Clinic: Tuesday, March 18, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Appointment necessary. Blood Pressure: Wednesday, March 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Canadian Rockies -- July 10 to16, seven days six nights. Great trip that includes the Calgary Stampede. Come to the Tooele Center for a flier and an application.

Grantsville Senior Center

Health Clinics -- Blood pressure: Every Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Wendover trip -- Friday, March 14. Cost is $15.

Tooele County Valley Players -- Saturday, March 15, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Senior Lifestyles -- Tuesday, March 18, at 1 p.m. Calvin Curtis, a lawyer, who specializes in Elder Law, will speak and answer questions. Cameron Bevan from Source One will also be there.

Senior Circle

Senior Circle is for anyone over the age of 50 and costs only $15 per year. Receive hospital, local, and national benefits. Call 843-3690 or stop by the hospital volunteer desk to sign up. All activities require an RSVP except for exercise.

Exercise -- Sittercise classes meet Mondays at 2 p.m. in the MWMC classrooms. Free to members. Body Instincts meets Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at Pinnacle Therapy, 29 S. Main St. Free to members. Hinges and Twinges, a water aerobics class, meets Tuesday and Thursdays at 10 and 11 a.m., at Pratt Aquatic Center. Cost is $2.50 for members, $20 for a 10-pass punch card, and $3.50 for non-members.

Pizza Bingo -- Thursday, March 13, at 5 p.m., at MWMC. $3 for pizza.

Lunch Bunch -- Friday, March 14, at noon. Meet at Applebees for your noon meal and friends. Dutch treat. Please RSVP.

Senior Lifestyles -- Tuesday, March 18, at 11 a.m., at the Grantsville Senior Center.

Kick drug habits

LDS Family Services addiction recovery meetings are Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at 1030 S. 900 West, room 118, Tooele. Enter on the north side of the chapel. The Erda meeting has been discontinued.

Castaways AA
