Correction
A photo caption in the sports section last Thursday was deleted during production. The photo showed Grantsville softball first baseman Mallory Oltjenbruns stretching to catch a ball at first base in a game against Bear River.
Tooele softball
Tooele dropped its first region game of the season on Thursday 4-1 to Springville at Deseret Peak Complex. The loss puts the Buffs in a tie with the Red Devils for the region title. Springville pitcher Sarah Clark scattered four hits with Tooele's lone run coming in the sixth inning on a home run by Matti Snow. Springville scored twice in the first inning and added two more in the fifth to post the victory. Tooele will play four games in four days starting today with a game at Provo. They will play at Taylorsville High School on Wednesday at 4 p.m., at Mountain View on Thursday at 4 p.m. and then finish the regular season on Friday hosting 5A power Riverton at 3:30 p.m. at Deseret Peak Complex.
Tooele girls golf
The Tooele girls continue their winning ways, this time at Gladston Golf Course in Payson. It was their second closest match of the season finishing with a 212, just seven strokes ahead of league nemesis Orem. Sadie Palmer again won individual honors with a 37. Meredith Nigh had the second best score for Tooele with a 55. Kaitlyn Dahl and Mallory Peterson each fired a 60 to round out the top four scores. The girls were also awared the Region 7 crown in Payson and a story will follow in Thursday's edition.
Grantsville baseball
The Grantsville High School baseball team walloped Ogden 17-1 on Thursday. The Cowboys finished in third place in Region 11 and will face Wasatch High School on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Juan Diego High School with a second game scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
GHS Wall of Fame
Grantsville High School is now accepting nominations for its GHS Wall of Fame. Nominees must have finished playing high school sports at least three years ago, or retired from coaching at GHS a minimum of three years ago. Nominations should be sent to Grantsville High School athletic director Pat Ciervo, 155 Cowboy Dr., Grantsville, UT 84029 or emailed to pciervo@tooelesd.org.
Mule Deer Foundation
The Tooele County Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation will hold its Second Annual Banquet on May 17. The event will start at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. The night will include live auctions and raffling of prizes. Children will also be able to bid for prizes. The foundation was awarded $7,400 in chapter awards which will go toward projects in the county. The foundation is looking for volunteers to help complete various work projects using these funds. Coaches will be honored
Five former coaches will be honored by the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation (USHFF) during the annual Distinguished High School Coaches Award banquet. Marie Bone, Thom Budge, Jim Dickson, Mike Hall and Ron Rushton will receive their awards May 13 at the South Towne Exposition Center. Inaddition, former college coach Lori Richards will be recognized as a coach of merit. For dinner reservations ($35), send checks to USHFF secretary Scott Mayne, 10182 S.
