Dustin Durfee continues to stay ahead of the competition with his victories for the Grantsville High School track team.

Durfee won three events in a home meet last Wednesday against athletes from Logan, Tooele, Dugway and Wendover.

"Dustin and one of the top hurdlers in the state from Logan went at it pretty good in the 300 hurdles at the meet," said coach Steve Allen.

Durfee edged Logan's James Rowher by 1.3 seconds to win the event with a time of 38.52. Durfee also won the 100 hurdles and the 400 meters.

The Grantsville team is tuning up for the Region 11 track meet next Wednesday and Thursday in Ogden. Some of the school's top athletes will compete Saturday at the BYU Invitational.

"Ogden and Logan are the top teams in the region, but we have a few quality athletes who put some fear into those teams because our kids come in and place high in events and take points away from them. They (other teams) know how hard we compete," Allen said.

"A lot of our kids make up for any lack in natural talent by just pushing themselves more mentally and physically," the coach said.

"We're getting to the point in the season where we are fine-tuning. We're not pushing some of our kids in some events at dual meets because we don't want them to be burned out when we get to region and state," Allen said.

"The dual meets give some of our younger kids much needed experience," the coach said.
