GJHS teacher selected to attend Chief Justice John Marshall Seminar in Richmond, Va.

Mr. Doug Snow, Grantsville Junior High School U.S. History, Utah Studies, and seventh grade Study Strategies teacher, will be among 30 secondary school teachers from throughout the United States that will converge on Richmond, Va., May 8, for an intensive three-day study of Chief Justice John Marshall and his impact on the American judicial system. Mr. Snow will represent Grantsville Junior High and the history teachers from the state of Utah at this event. The annual seminar is sponsored by the John Marshall Foundation, and the California based Center for Civic Education, which selects teachers from a nationwide nominating process. It is funded by the Lipman Foundation.

The seminar is designed to educate secondary school teachers more deeply about the impact of the John Marshall Court on constitutional law.

"Grantsville Junior High School has an outstanding history department with Paul Mower, Timothy Henry, Greg Hogan and Doug Snow. The history department sponsored the Alexander Hamilton exhibit for the school and the Grantsville community last fall. They are always looking for ways to make history relevant and come alive for our students. We appreciate the John Marshall Foundation and the Lipman Foundation for making this opportunity available for Mr. Snow. Ultimately our students will gain from his experience. I am confident that it will broaden Mr. Snow's knowledge of constitutional law and make him a better teacher for our students," said Mr. Keith Davis, school principal.

The May 8-11 seminar will include a keynote address from Jean Edward Smith, the author of "John Marshall: Definer of a Nation." Smith is the John Marshall professor of Political Science at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.

Participants will also tour the John Marshall House, an historic landmark in downtown Richmond, as well as other Marshall related sites in the city, including his burial site at Shockoe Hill Cemetery.

Another highlight of the seminar will be a walking tour of downtown Richmond, led by John Marshall re-enactor Mark Greenough. That tour ends with a question and answer session with the Chief Justice at the Virginia Supreme Court.

The final evening session will feature remarks by John Marshall Foundation President, James W. Morris III, and will be capped by entertainment from the Colonial Dance Club of Richmond, which will provide a program of Early American dancing.

EnergySolutions Foundation scholarship recipients

In addition to Tooele High School student Erik Houghtby, two more students from Tooele County schools have received scholarships from the EnergySolutions Foundation Scholarship Program. The additional recipients are Dugway High School student Jackson Jones and Grantsville High School student Melinda Beckett.

Students selected will each receive a $2,000 scholarship to pursue a bachelor's degree in math, science, or engineering. Students can choose what school they attend, as long as they plan to seek a degree in biochemistry, chemistry, ecology, engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics, meteorology, or physics.

The scholarship is offered to one 10th grade student from each of Utah's 145 high schools. The scholarship recipient from each school is then eligible for a Distinguished Award scholarship for an additional $2,500, $5,000, or $25,000 and a laptop computer upon entering college.

Utah's scholarship recipients will be honored at a banquet in May in Salt Lake City, Utah. The keynote speaker for the banquet will be Richard Brown, Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Utah. The three Distinguished Award recipients will be announced at this banquet.

The goal of the scholarship program is to help create the next generation of mathematicians, scientists, and engineers for America's future. "This is an excellent opportunity for the Foundation to act locally and get results on a global scale," said Jordan Clements, Chairman of the Board for the EnergySolutions Foundation.

What is FBLA? It is the largest and oldest business student organization in the world. A quarter of a million high school and middle school students, college and university students, faculty, educators, administrators, and business professionals have chosen to be members of the premier business education association preparing students for careers in business.

Why is FBLA-PBL so popular? It's simple. FBLA has developed a program that excites students, faculty and administrators, and business professionals. Imagine being able to build a portfolio of documented accomplishments as a complement to your academic experience. When applying for scholarships, you can demonstrate how you served in a leadership position, received awards, or participated in projects for the largest business based student organization in the world. Students find ownership in a program like this and are able to associate the benefits of academic achievement with success in the world of business.

Students who compete can choose from over 50 competitive and skills events from the areas of technology, public speaking, business, finance, and management. Some may finish as the very best in the nation, win recognition, and win cash from FBLA sponsored events.

Students who are interested in developing leadership, communication, and team skills, or simply looking for an organization to meet and network with others at the local, state and national levels, then FBLA-PBL is that organization.

FBLA also provides opportunities for business leaders in the community through membership to a professional division. Business leaders and students who would like more information can contact Mrs. Wendi Morton at Grantsville High or visit the national Web site at http://fbla-pbl.org.
